I feel bad too

Postby Nacho » Sun Oct 17, 2004 9:38 am

I feel pretty bad for the people who care about winning. Glad we have a week off. I like those more than playing. I doubt Bennett will be fired. No one wants to sink $1 million to buy him out. Tubbs is the best hire Copeland ever made and he didn't want to do that. What we are seeing is 15 years of failed policy come to fruition. We have hit bottom, again. We had our dead cat bounce against SJSU. I don't see another win in sight this year. Sorry to say it. I know that some true fans are deeply hurting right now. I wish the last few years had gone differently but they didn't. For those of you who are sick and saddened I can only say to not get too upset about it. The people in charge have set us on this path. The fans are not to blame. We hung in there. We were great fans. We really were. Who else would have tolerated this. For 15 years we supported this program.

Back in the Cotton Bowl since 1963, that is how long I have been going to SMU games. The crowd was fun and people were nice. The TEAM was better than some and not as good as others, but there was always a chance to win.

Yes, I am low today. Just remember that while you get a ration of crap from your workmates on Monday - Dr. Turner, Mr. Copeland and the Board of Regents want you to have the ONE reply. The reply that will silence all remarks....

WE have an 83% graduation rate.

WOW that shuts them up.

I am really tired of this. If this is the best we could do under NCAA rules that would be one thing. But to choose to be faulsly pious and observe even strickter standards is crazy.

I love SMU, and always will, but I am finished dreaming, hoping, working, selling this program. See you at the remaining games.

Next year - right

This sounds absurd, but its gotten to the point where my 8 year is wondering out loud if he should not wear his SMU shirts to school anymore. He is a well adjusted kid, but apparently the crap from the other kids is relentless. Kids know, and a whole generation is being formed. Meanwhile no one at SMU seems to give a damn about competing. Talk is cheap. So while its a little surprising, I understand BUS's sentiments this morning. Nacho too. These folks are real fans and no one is listening.

Let's see if Tubbs can get this team to win a conference championship or at least a win in a post season tournament before he is named "the best hire Copeland ever made..." For all we know, Tubbs might be like Bennett - a great assistant coach but a terrible head coach.

Wow - now there's a positive outlook. How can you not be excited about Coach Tubbs? You sound like you're almost hoping he fails.

When Bus gets disilusioned..I get disillusioned! I regretfully must agree with him. I am tired of being "hopeful". I went to SMU in the late 50's with Meredith and as Bus said, we werent the greatest team, but everyone respected us and KNEW on any given Saturday we could kick their butt. Now we have become a laughing stock.."hapless". I still have trouble realizing this. I can't see how we can win another game this season.
I don't want to hear about a young team or graduation rates. Other 'young" tams out there win more than 1 freaking game in TWO YEARS! TWO years!
I am crying out of despair! Long live Inez Perez!

I watched the OU game yesterday and they did a segment comparing their great freshman RB Peterson with Dickerson. They showed some film clips comparing their running styles. Seeing those old clips of that great SMU team made me realize how far we have fallen. Little did I know at the time but we peaked in '82. We will never be that good again but we should at least be competitive in our own conference. I think most SMU fans would settle for that.

No, I don't hope that coach Tubbs fails - but it is a little too early to call him the savior of SMU basketball. Everybody thought Phil Bennett was going to be the savior of SMU football, but after 31 games, his team is not playing any better than it did in his first game.

What we wanted to see this year was progress. Except for the win against SJS, we have been pretty much blown out by the same teams that blew us out last year. Whether, Bennett can't defense La. Tech or Rice, or whether our kids aren't there yet, is the big question for Pony Fans. We have not seen any progress this year. Fresno, Nevada, Tulsa, UTEP will tell us if there will be any progress this year. We lost to three of those teams last year by one score (either a TD or FG or less). Let's hope that we get a good effort against Fresno, and can win one or more of those other three games. We know that Tulsa is pretty good. We know that Nevada and UTEP improved. So we might not win those games, but they need to be close. The other question is whether this team has quit or not. We'll know more as the season winds down.

This just isnt fun anymore.

This forum used to support our Mustangs now look we what got. We got people wanting a new coach when we all knew we wouldnt start winning by atleast 2005. We got 85 Freshman and Sophomore's on the team! Please tell me you see another team out there with 85 Fish and Soph's winning conference championships..You wanna know why? Because its impossible.

This forum used to love our Mustangs and would support them through anything. Now we have trolls everywhere here. We got people who are just loving seeing the Mustangs fall like this. I used to love coming here and now..its just not worth it. New members signing up destorying the forum from what it used to be in a supporting way of SMU now it the forum is just like..."We dont care SMU will never get better"

Whatever..Im out. I love my Mustangs but nothing is worth seeing this happen.

Oh, come on Mustangs35. Don't be a quitter. If our players can stand getting drummed week after week without giving up, you can, too.

HBO is playing "A League of Their Own" about 12 times a day right now and I finally broke down and watched it again. Tom Hanks says in the movie to one of the star players who is wanting to quit because the game is too hard,

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great."

It's easy to be the fan of a winning team.

And I'm just tired of "seeing our boys get beaten to death our there." Look sunshiner, don't get mad at the people who cannot ignore what is happening on the field.

While I'm sure every here would love to cheer a winning Mustang team, I think many on this board would be satisfied with a competitive Mustang team, which we haven't really had in awhile, and the excuses are getting pretty thin.

As to the 83% graduation rate, yeah, that's something to be proud of, but it's nowhere near enough. As I have said before, would I trade a winning team for a top 20 academic ranking, but for all the bluster of the administration and faculty senate, we're still mired in the 70's. Heck we're not even the best school in Texas (and the two better have much more competitive programs). Perhaps I'm crazy, but I don't care if the boys compete for the national title every year; I do care that they make a good showing from time to time. Notre Dame does it. Stanford can do it. Northwestern can do it. Wake Forest can do it. Rice can even do it. Tulane every now and then can even have a winning season. All of those schools are considered better than SMU academically and competitive athletics haven't exactly tarnished their reputations; I don't think there's much argument there. SMU should be able to have a few winning seasons and a program people tread carefully around on the schedule as well. There's no excuse. Either the administration and the faculty senate need to put us in the same category as these schools academically, or we need to start thinking about replacing them.
Support the Commitment! We're all SMU Mustangs fans- we should all be committed!
