Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)Froglicious is absolutely right. But part of the solution is the problem of the chicken and the egg. We will bring more fans in against better competition (UAB, Tulane, Rice, ECU, etc are not cared for in the area really). But winning is the other component. Getting into the BE, AND continue this upwards trend will hopefully justify the stadium expansion. I think if we ever do get an invite to the BE we have to totally look at our marketing problems and fix those asap.
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)It just occurred to me what the strategy re lack of marketing might be. We are building a war chest to pay our way into a BCS conference.
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)after all was said and done we wound up with about 50k to spend on discretionary marketing this year. Even with (some) additional travel costs, $20million that we didnt have before goes a long way..

Milwaukee PONY UP!
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)
Not sure I agree 100%. If you are talking big12, I think attendance solves itself. But we are talking Big East. Not sure the average Dallas Fan comes to see SMU vs. Uconn, Louisville, or Cincy. Yest those teams might be better, just not sure it guarantees a huge boost in ticket sales. Their fans aren't going to travel here. Don't get me wrong, we jump at any chance for BCS, just saying we still have to win like TCU to get butts in the seats.
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)Doesnt matter...the gate accounts for 0 revenue....Become a power in an AQ conference and dallas will start to show...
Re: Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)
I would have to agree with that. The BE teams probably dont have huge fan bases here which B12 teams might have. That said, Dallas fans are easily attracted to glittery things like BCS status.... Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk Mustangs Abu!
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)
I agree with that, I guess when I posted I had the prospect of the academies as football conference mates in mind. Those schools would definitely help us out in attendance I'd imagine. But overall, you're right, unless it's the Big XII, the Big East is only a marginal improvement over C-USA competition.
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)SMU to BCS. Big East would get us to that goal.
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)What is the $ amount difference between the 2 conferences?
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)Betwwen Cusa and big east....current prob 10-12 mil a year. However they are up for new TV contract
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)Bowl Payout by conference:
Bowl Payouts by Conference Conference Payout SEC $40.85 million Big Ten $37.25 million Big 12 $34.55 million ACC $34.05 million Big East $30.65 million Pac-12 $29.4 million TV Deal info: Big East current deal-expires in 2013 (or when renegotiated): $36million anually(yikes) Big XII deal-new one-1.17billion over 13 years didnt know the difference was so large..
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)but compared to CUSA - it is a swing of at least 8-9 Million to our athletic department. A big dang deal. basketball would also start adding to the bottom line.
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)
The BE BB contract alone is 3MM per team and about to go to 6MM even with Cuse and Pitt leaving. Football will probably roll in at 11-12MM (currently 5MM ish) per football program for a total of 16-18MM per football school. My guess is CUSA schooles are getting 1.5MM or so. I hope we keep the BE alive. If we do we will have a blast in the Conference with the largest TV footprint by a mile. Who wants to go to Ames, Lubbock, Waco, little apple, etc.
Re: ESPN Insider rumor (SMU)With all of this talk of BE football expansion, do the bball teams (G'Town, St. John's, Seton Hall, Nova, etc) stay? what would we be looking at, an 18 or 20 team bball conference?
