Starting FreshAs a lifelong pony and 3 year Bennet fan,I too have decided it is time for a regime change. Devotion to the program can obscure the vision, but after tonights performance it is quite clear that it is time for a change. Being a Houston native I watched Dana Dimmel get canned under the same conditions (good recruiting, saying all the right things to the press and fan base, then fielding a high school caliber team.) I ask anyone who reads this to tell me that it would take less than 2 seconds to forget about Coach Bennet. The Coogs are definately on the way up. They have a highly respected coach, national TV exposure, and are competetive on a weekly basis. Dana Dimmel is forgotten and not even in the rear view mirror. Pony fans, the hardest thing to do is swallow your pride and admit we all have been wrong about our coach. Like many tough decisions, after they are made you realize how easy they are to make. Am I right?
Let's see how this season plays out. If we go 1-10 and get blown out by Fresno, UTEP, Tulsa and Nevada, then Bennett will be sitting on a very hot seat. However, unless you are prepared to write a big check, my guess is that this coaching staff gets at least another year to see what they can do with their recruits. The level of competition won't get any easier in CUSA.
starting freshI agree. Time to reevaluate our present talent which is the responsibility of the coaching staff. We have some good athletes who may be playing out of position--our secondary is weak--any chance of some receivers etc stepping up as defensive backs? It can not get any worse--time to evaluate is now in prep for next season. I'm not saying to burn any redshirts, but practice is a good time to reevaluate.
We are not losing because of coaching. We are losing because we do not have equal talent. In fact, we are not even close in having equal talent. I understand Tx. Tech and OSU should have better players. After all, they are in BCS conferences and the Big 12 schools place an emphasis on winning and competing. SMU's athletic policies are really exposed when our conference opponents humilitate us every week. Our unranked conference opponents have so much more talent than SMU it is hard to watch. Changing coaches will not matter because no good coach will ever come to SMU. Money may not even pursuade a good up and coming coach to come here. It is career suicide. Until SMU chances its policies it will be more of the same regardless of who is coaching. Every year more and more SMU alumni are not coming to the games. Is it worth it? Look out Division 1-AA...here we come!!!
