They will never compete with OU, Texas or Oklahoma State, just like we wouldn't.

If that's the case then why would we want to join them in a major conference like the B12? I like football for the competition. I want to win and I want my teams to be competitive against whomever is in their conference. If we can't be competitive with the top teams in our conference then we might as well move somewhere where we can compete.

For the money and exposure of course.

Ah, so this is all about SMU making more money. Not about winning anything meaningful. Gotcha. If that is truly the case. If that is the real reasons behind a move up. Count me out. I guess I'll have to turn all my attention to the real amateur athletics high school football and Olympic gymnastics.

Oct. 6th...more like the day the dream of SMU returning to relelvance died. Sad sad day. Leaving an irrelevant Conference USA to go to a nothing Big East does nothing for us.

If we go to the BE it is a big deal. As others have stated the BE will hold onto its BCS AQ status through 2014. That gives us 3 season to compete outright for a BCS bowl. 3 seasons to reap the financial reward of the BE TV contract (and when you include BB its not bad). 3 seasons to gain greater national relevance. It does a lot for us.

ed4l- What you say may be true however our chances of being invited to the BE just dropped very substantially with the froggies going b12-x.

I'm not so sure that it hurts us. It allows them to go after SMU and perhaps Rice or UH. Rice? Well remember, the Catholic schools are driving this bus and academics is something they think about (although Cincy is in that conference and we all know that they had a 0 grad rate a couple of times).
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

SMU is a logical substitute for TCU in the BE. But that doesn't mean we belong there.

It's only dead if UT and to a less extent OU decide it's dead. Otherwise it will live forever.

TCU's recruiting profile has been enhanced significantly. I don't know if they will regularly compete on the level of a UT or an OU, but they will definitely have an advantage over us until we find a BCS conference.

We don't get anyone that TCU wants as it is. They recruit in Texas we don't even know where that is.

In Texas recruiting, we are behind a long list including UT, OU, LSU, Baylor, A&M, TCU..... All but TCU and Baylor have been on that list since before we spoke English in Texas. We got a little too fixated on taking recruits away from UT and A&M in the late 70's and we all know where that got us eventually. Our strength is is recruiting out west now and that seems to be paying off. We also did quite well with a certain recruit from Michigan. June is a good national recruiter and, based on where our program is, we are doing quite well.

I have no issue with the great improvement in the quality of our recruits. But it is ridiculous if we dont work to be competitive with everyone else for top talent in our own back yard. I would like to see long term trust and relationships between our athletic department and the local high school coaches.
