Tubbs might also have felt that Montana State might be a good altitude game. We have had problems in the past when we go to places like Boise and Nevada. Getting a game at altitude early in the season will give the players (especially the freshmen) a taste of what's coming later in the year so that they won't be surprised when they get winded earlier in the game.
Bottom line on the schedule is three easy wins that allow experiments with line ups, plays, substitution patterns etc. If we come out of those games with some confidence it works great. If we get our panties all in a bunch like Dement would do because everything wasn't perfect, even though we were winning those games, all it becomes is three worthless wins. I vote for a positive result in this regime.
Georgetown has been famous/infamous for years in their light early season scheduling. When Big John was running the program it worked great, but once Eshrick took over, they won early and lost late. This years early schedule features powerhouses like Citadel, Davidson, Howard, Norfolk State and San Jose, but also Temple, Penn State, Illinois and Hawaii Tourney.
If you read my post, the reason I included the exhibition games was not to make the schedule look softer, but to illustrate the point that those teams had 2 additional opportunities to get game experience without risking a loss. Precisely because we don't and can't have such games on our schedule any more, we need some tune up games that there is no real risk of losing. As I said before, a WAC (or ConfUSA) team CANNOT afford losses. SOS means little if you have a few losses. Besides which, as already pointed out, the other OOC games on more than make up for this year's weaker opponents.
