Tubbs missing out on local guys.

Post by Johnny Rock »

It appears Tubbs is taking a page out of Dement's recruiting philosophy and is missing out on every top local prospect to date. Does this concern anyone? I thought Tubbs had more local influence. Maybe SMU's lack of commitment to its athletic programs is a big negative factor for high school players that it too much to overcome regardless of who is coaching. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I have a thought: you don't know as much as you think -- and that's not a slam on you. I counted at least 6 DISD coaches at Midnight Madness, and there probably were more that I didn't recognize. Rest assured Coach Tubbs is as well-connected in Dallas as has been reported. He already knows what players he plans to sign, but they can't be announced until they sign or at least announce their commitment. Have faith in Coach Tubbs. His first class may not have a DISD flavor to it, but he's already laying the groundwork for future classes. He'll get players.

Good call out, Fresh. BTW, this class may have more of a local flavor than is apparent at this time.

I did notice that about a week ago a Guard from Dallas Hillcrest named Jonathan Amos (6-4)who stated SMU had offered instead committed to Toledo. He was rated No. 20 in Texas by TexasHoops.com.

Don't forget about transfers and jucos. Tubbs already brought in a JC guy with his first scholarship. After seeing him in person, Big Ike is gonna help and is at least the kind of frontcourt player that SMU has been missing in the recent past.

As for the local h.s stars, Tubbs might not hit the jackpot this year, but he gives us a chance with guys that we otherwise wouldn't have had. Its gonna pay off sooner or later. Watch.

True enough, we seem to have at least had more interest expressed by high end recruits this year than in years past--gotta learn to walk before you can run.

There is generally at least a 1 to 2 year lead time in recruiting the elite players. In order to get them to sign with you as seniors, you oftentimes have to have been working on them since they were in 11th, 10, or even 9th grade.

If Tubbs is covering the lower grade levels like he should be, then his best recruiting should kick in by next year and the year after.

Mark this down as a fact........ the local DFW high school coaches do love coach Tubbs. Whether or not this will result in him signing tons of great players remains to be seen, however, because that is not the only factor in play in attracting the best prospects.
