Do you guys really WANT Garrett Gilbert?
I know he went to your practice and was a 5 star dude coming into UT but seriously, other than in relief of McCoy in one game he has looked freaking terrible. The Run and Shoot is based on very quick decision making and a ton of check downs. GG has thrown like 10 more INTs than TDs. I know you guys see that deal up in Wisconsin and what happened at Auburn, but this dude is NOT your ticket back to the promised land. If you don't believe me, ask the UT fan you work with.
SMU don't need this guy what y'all need is about 5 more years to develop, beat some big name teams, like maybe my team in a bowl game . It SUCKS what happened to your team, I can NOT imagine if somebody woulda took Michigan Football behind the shed and shot it in the back of the head for something everybody was doing. Then the trigger puller sat back and watched Miami, Florida State, Alabama and ohio be spared over it, more than once in the case of Miami. Which IMO should be in front of the firing squad (Miami that is).
I understand that you guys see SMU football as a glorious thing and historically it truly is but unfortunately the penalties have not ended. Although JJ has them coming to a halt real soon. By the way why in the heck do you guys want to join the SEC and gat hammered every week before your program is TRULY ready? SMU is almost back to being SMU, the team I sometimes refer to as the Notre Dame of the south. I know there's a ludicrous amount of money involved but..... To me it seems like all you guys want is to be legit again. You're pretty much there guys couple more years and you will be, to everybody not just dudes like me.

No one here is stupid enough to believe Gilbert is some kind of savior but we need QB depth and he's a former 5 star recruit.

He ain't even depth behind underclassmen at UT. If Nobody here believes he's a savior why in the heck are there like 47 threads about him? Depth is one thing but that's a lot of attention to a depth QB. You all don't need to live on UT's Scraps. SMU is on the rise under June Jones. Y'all got UT outcoached IMO. So maybe JJ could make him work, I guess.

JJ has a chance to recover a great player--No. 1 HS, 5 star recruit. If it doesn't work, it costs us a scholarship. If it does work, JJ becomes a legend!

Could be a great player if he recovers from surgery and catches on to the system. Has 1.5 years to learn and then would play the 2013 season. It all depends on if JJ sees potential, and where current QBs in waiting sit. This will be post KP, so how well are the guys behind him looking? The only one that people seem to rave about on this board is Printz and he will not be here (if it works out) until 2013, would be nice to be able to redshirt him instead of throwing him into the lions den. JJ has a great track record in turning around QBs. McD came from UNM and look where he is now, also a certain player named Colt something or another once upon a time at Hawaii. Not saying that GG is the next super star, but he could have a huge impact here with Junes help. Plenty of UT QBs have made impacts transferring to other programs.

Agreed. SMU isn't quite to the point where they have a severe shortage of scholarships (you know, that good problem to have). Until that happens, they can role the dice on a guy like Gilbert.
We also don't have a stable of 5star recruits to fall back on. Would the scholarship he takes up be going to a better player? I doubt it at this point.
Re: Do you guys really WANT Garrett Gilbert?
The thing that concerns me is that the UT people say he stares down wr's and does not go through his progression very well. The thing that helps JJMcD is that he goes through his progressions really well.

If he wasnt having trouble, he wouldnt be available caused. being thrown to the wolves before he was ready could have wrecked his head. Bring him in, see if 1.5 years can rehabilitate him and teach him how to play qb without pressure of playing. Great upside if it works (he has a rocket arm). If it doesn't, he only a loss of a scholarship for a few years. It's a long term option that's priced very cheaply by the market.

Re: Do you guys really WANT Garrett Gilbert?
if he can recover a yr of eligibility form the ncaa the timeline for the graduation of our own qbs currently and the up and coming player's development is just really smooth the kid has talent but greg davis [gary patterson]'d him up and they havent done him any favors since mac brown wanted to put everything from last yr behind him...let it be clear if this episode hasnt already made it clear for you, there is no loyalty at texas if you hit a roadbump

Re: Do you guys really WANT Garrett Gilbert?
Whatever we do the most important thing is to make the decision based on what fans of Michigan and Texas say. Do not trust our coaches but rather trust the ones that shoved Ryan Mallet out the door and think that a kickoff through the uprights is deserving of 3 points. Never, I repeat, never trust Jones on making a decision on a quarterback. His track record is atrocious.

We're still learning how to consolidate our posts into a single thread.

His 5 star was pumped by the quality of schools recruiting him -- they very well could have missed. I'm far more interested in the fact that JJ thinks he's something that may help the team. We'll see.
Yeah didn't mean to imply just because he was a high rated recruit we should take him. More of the fact, people are turning down a QB with a possibly great upside, when we are not over running with all star players at any position, much less QB. JJ is the coach, and it seems like downtrodden QBs are his specialty. If JJ sees something, then people probably will change their tune come 2013 when GG fills the QB stop for a year to continue SMU winning.
Also McD and McNeal are the two most recent transfers that come to mind that have transferred in under June. McD is now the starter and McNeal gave us a great year (wish he had stayed for two).
