Mustangs35...
Look, no disrespect to you, and I hate being the one to say this to you (better me than Ponysnob or Troll)...
I appreciate the fact that you are so high on SMU football and the university itself, and I do hope that you are able to attend once you get out of whatever grade you are in Longview...BUT
To come on this board and accuse those of us who have actually paid tuition, attended and given donations to SMU and who have a right to expect improvement in their alma mater's football program of "loving seeing the Mustangs fall like this"...well, to put it mildly, nah...I won't say it.
This is a board (the only board) on which alumni, students, fans, and, yes, trolls, alike come to voice their concerns or opinions about SMU football. Most of the people on this board LOVE SMU and would do just about anything in their power to see the football team win...WE HAVE A RIGHT TO BE ANGRY AND EXPRESS OUR FRUSTRATIONS WITH THIS TERRIBLE TEAM AND ITS FAILURE TO IMPROVE AFTER 15 YEARS.
Trust me, there are more people that I graduated with who don't even know the name of our coach or who we even played this year--all they assume is that we are losing...they are gone...The people on this board are die hard, loyal fans, and many of us GIVE, GIVE and GIVE SOME MORE for NOTHING IN RETURN...If SMU lost us, there would be no one left...the purpose of being a fan and supporting a team in competition is to receive a little joy now and again when they win...Our team is not even competitive...they are being blown out week after week by weak conference opponents.
YOU have not yet earned the right to criticize me or anyone else who supports our team week after week, year after year. Come back when you've shelled out $100K on an education or donated thousands of dollars to the Mustang Club. Buddy, without people like me, you would have no team to spend your Friday nights posting about...
Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!

I believe in the Boys and still think Coach Bennett can make up competitive.
The part of the team that are not working are.... The Administration/Faculty Senate/Board of Regents.
I know some of these people and like them but SMU is not a top 10 or 20 school.
Why do we put resrictions on ourselves?
When the why is answered we can change.
GO SMU and GO Coach Bennett

Hello Eaststang -
Why are you acting like a [deleted]. Things need to change - How is that being a " Stillwell Angel"
Rah Rah and accepting the current situation would mean Still Well.
And we did win a game. That is progress - Not near enough for me but something.

Mustang 335,are you telling me that a team cannot be compeitive with 85 freshman/soph,you said it was impossible. Well you need to open your eyes and realize that bennett is not a head coach and never will be. He can't coach, if they were all seniors it would be the same result, I would bet that if bennett was at A&M right now they would be 1-5 instead of 5-1.Can't you see this? Are you at the same game as I am. He is horrible, not the players, him.
Oh by the way Boise has many fres/soph as we do and they are not only winning, but they are also in the top 20 and will probably win the conference, I guess they did the impossible! But you know, the impossible is possible if you have a coach.l

Bus- I'm not calling you a Stillwell Angel, just the recent arrivals on the board who seem to be fostering negativity. You have earned a great deal of cred on this board. I did not see your post and my intention was to add a little levity to the thread about a "League of their Own". I believe that you and I agree on most of the remedies, big uglies, about 40 guys who make Louie Kelcher look pretty, and deal with the academic issues remaining including athlete friendly majors (like we used to have). On the other hand, we do have company in our current condition. Duke and Vanderbilt. They seem to have the same problems that we do on the football field. And lastly, we do get some good moments as Mustangs even if it hasn't been on the gridiron. Watching some of our kids compete in the Olympics, seeing the late great Payne Stewart win the U.S. Open or lead the U.S. to its last Ryder Cup victory, and seeing that our soccer team is ranked 4th in the Country. That may not be what we want, but at least it is something to be proud of. Yes, institutional changes are still needing to be made. But the worst shackles have been removed, we're are in tweeking mode. And by the way, Navy does not have athlete friendly majors and they have really improved their program.

Eastang,
Good points. I would add that the alternative is to "demand" changes (listed throughout the Board). I am always amused that this "point" more than any other is the missing ingredient by several posters.
Most things worth doing require new skills, time, commitment and long term view of things. Yes, 15 years is a long time but, during this period:
- BCS model changes the revenue model for the big schools, thus handicapping the non-BCS and private schools
- Conference alignment became a critical element
- Salaries for coaches and staff and operating expenses look like a hockey stick on a graph
- our dilemma is not unique, the environment is tough, especially for a medium sized, privates.
But, when we generate some success, the value of our school and program will be even more valuable to potential recruits. I like the foundation we are laying (despite all the obvious frustrations) and know that the difficulties of our challenges will make success so much more sweet.
Guys, our limitations need to become assets but don't simply think that "changes" must be made, as if this is the right and only prognosis. Complex problems aren't solved by simple answers.
I support these players and those, who want be part of something extremely exciting.

East;
All is good. I had thought that maybe you had crossed over to the dark side and saying that I and a lot others were HAPPY with this program.
We do agree.
We talk but what needs to happen is Send you donation checks in to SMU - DONT SIGN THEM.
Redeem for Cash when NCAA rules are followed.

BUS- in the movie "A League of their Own" Stillwell Angel was the bratty little kid who kept singing, "you're going to lose!, you're going to lose".

Good point, PonySnob, and one with which I completely concur. Seven months after Mike Dement was sent packing, I'm still trying to digest the logic behind firing the third winningest coach in SMU basketball history while keeping the first football coach who managed to lose every game in a season.
Does Tubbs deserve a chance and our support? Sure he does. But there's nothing wrong with a little healthy skepticism. After all, we've learned the hard way that good assistants do not necessarily make successful head coaches.
