Probably Just Another Silly Idea

..... while watching Fresno and Boise last nite, I thought about the big green "V" that appears on the back of Fresno St's helmet, on their field and even last nite in their coaching box. Fresno has tried the identify themselves as the University of the State of the California Valley. What about identifying SMU in much the same way with a "Big D" emblem. It doesn't have be large but it should be pervasive-on helmets, on the field, on logos in our advertisements. SMU since the demise of the SWC has basically no National profile-I bet about only 20-25% outside the Southwest could even tell you where SMU is located. While Fresno's Valley does more universally support the Fresno football team-there has been no university more intimately involved in the development and success of Big D in the 20th Century. The Big D label is catchy and is already nationally recognized. I learned during the Mustang Mania days that its a lot better to suggest silly ideas than it is to sit back without any ideas at all. And while watching the Texas-Tech game I noticed how the Texas Tech reacted so quickly and immediately when they began to ring that darn cow bell-I guess we tried the stampeding Mustang which actually did get some people off their feet but didn't quite sound right-this year we are just relying on Kendall Mouton to get the fans fired up in key 3rd and 4th down situations....

I would prefer a "Mustang Club" emblem on their helmuts. That way, the players know that the good alumni support them.

I think Stallion's idea is a great one. I don't want to see a star that some folks might compare with the cowboys, but something on the helmet (maybe in the back like the Fresno State V) that designates the Ponies as THE team of Dallas.

Or what about a logo of some kind with "DFW" and "Metroplex" in it somehow .... to try to take over the whole Metroplex? Wouldn't that hack offf the little froggies? We'd need to market the hell out of that -- on the Tubbs billboard in south Dallas, on radio ads, in the paper, etc. .... the new phrase/catchphrase would have to be EVERYWHERE.

Since we obviously are not THE team of Dallas, that would sort of be like any one of us running around with a sign stating "President of the U.S. of A." Let's first see if we can truely be the team of SMU students and Alums first then work on earning the title "THE team of Dallas."

There was actually some SERIOUS talk in the early 90's of changing the name of SMU to Dallas University, of some derivation of this, to better ID the school, positive recognition, change the negative "SMU" perception out there, etc., etc...people thought this change would help us locally, and nationally...I thought it was crazy..but, ...........long live Putt Choate.

but the more i think about it......you may be on to something

it would have to be done just right.....but if it was designed correctly.....it could be a real plus.......using dallas in a visual way to better promote SMU is a "No Brainer" really......

when you are trying to sell something......you must seperate yourself from the competition and use whatever is at your disposal to show that difference.......why leave "dallas" on the table in our visual selling wars with other schools that are in "Poe-Dunk, USA"?.....Gosh we need to use every tool we can......some kid may see it and think "hey that would be cool to go to school in DALLAS"!

SMU is the ONLY Div 1 college team in Dallas......so why not take advantage of that fact and display that on the back of our helmets in a classy subtle way?

maybe have a nice small picture of the dallas skyline that says something like "SMU - Big D's Team".

you are 100% correct.....when i mention SMU to people from outside the southwest....especially the younger generation......they have no idea where SMU is.......

SMU needs to be known as the "college in Dallas".....When people think of SMU they need to visualize Dallas........that would help the younger generation relate to and possibly choose SMU.

Wasn't that when the rumor was going around campus that Dallas Hall was going to become the logo for SMU or Dallas University. I have to think that the citizens of Dallas are glad that we did not change names given how bad our football team has been as it would have been one more black eye against the city.

We could always try the aTm thing, and be SMU: THE University of Dallas. I also like the idea of a little skyline logo incorporated somehow.
