For clarity, there already is a University of Dallas, a Catholic institution, located near Texas Stadium.

However, the D decal has some appeal.

Stallion, I like the idea.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Maybe something similar to the old Denver Broncos Logo could be used, perhaps?

I like the idea. Somehow a toney school like Georgetown got to be DC's team even though there are quite a few universities in DC. The other thing is to give away a bunch of hats with the Mustang logo on them, add in some Mustang silver jewelry and sell them in the urban areas of Dallas.

SMU athletics should always be actively marketing Dallas.

In addition to Stallion's idea, the following is selected from my post on March 20, 2004 titled "Hilltop Perspectives":

*** Strength Training / Sports Medicine (lower level of Lloyd ASC) - This excellent facility needs more of an SMU and Dallas theme (banners/pictures/posters/awards). There is too much grey paint and not enough “you are at SMU in Dallas”. A recruit walking through the hallways on a tour would see long walls of grey paint between rooms of interest. Create more of an SMU Athletics theme – classy, informative and memorable.

*** There is a stunning lack of SMU decals on cars across campus. SMU could mail two (free of charge) attractive SMU window decals to the parents of every undergraduate student admitted to the university. Some parents might put a decal on their vehicle(s) and/or the student might put one on their vehicle (if they have a vehicle). A few decals might even end up on little brother/sister’s bedroom window.

*** The absence of (“we support”) SMU posters/signage/pictures/branding at stores contiguous (along Hillcrest Ave. and Mockingbird Lane) to SMU is shameful. SMU has over 10,000 students plus faculty and staff and is an economic engine in the community. The merchants should at least pretend that they support SMU and appreciate business from members of the SMU community. Campus visitors notice the missing SMU-merchants connection.

*** SMU fans generally don’t wear any/much SMU attire. I attended college basketball games this season at Villanova, La Salle, Pennsylvania, Saint Joseph’s, Delaware and Rutgers. A good percentage of fans (young and old) (including visiting teams) in those arenas wore clothing that clearly identified their team.
Why do the majority of SMU fans that actually come to Moody Coliseum not wear SMU attire or colors?

When you visit Dallas and SMU once (sometimes more) a year like I do it is clear that SMU and Dallas are not tightly connected in the minds of most Metroplex residents.

Of course, winning and signing local players will go a long way toward making this "the" team of Dallas.

The old Denver Broncos logo is a great idea - a Mustang coming out of a big "D."

Someone get this to the marketing department

It is interesting that the SMU website shouts - Dallas - loud and clear on the home page http://www.smu.edu/ but the SMU Athletics website http://www.smumustangs.com/ does not.

That IS interesting. Hadn't noticed that. And it's a little weird, since the media guides always have pictures of downtown Dallas, as well as local sports figures identified with the city (Emmitt, A-Rod, Finley, etc., in years past - haven't seen this year's....)

Most web-sites for Universities and their associated Athletic sites have links to the city, town, Visitors Bureaus, etc. Dallas must have some dynamic sites we can associate with

I think we should go with a Freudian symol to identify with Big D and slap a bil ol' Reunion Tower on the back of the helmet.

Well maybe not really. But take a page from Hyman at TCU & get some unapologetic billboards all over the place...35 & Walnut Hill, 35 & LBJ, Restaurant Row...Loop 12...that say SMU....Big D's team.

As I recall, back when SMU moved from Ownby back to the Cotton bowl, SMU had several DART buses painted (w/ the vinyl overlay) saying as much. This campaign could employ DART in a similar fashion.

...neato idea, now you guys our on to something...why stop there? How about putting a real live looking cowboy on top of the Mustang, to really make a cool Texas connection, or maybe the SMU Mustang could be running around some barells, with a hot barelling racing chick on top, you know, pro rodeo is REAL hot right now...or, instead of a BIG D on the helmets, or a skyline of BIG D on the helmets, put a Dallas Cowboy star on there, or a Dallas Stars emblem, that's really cool, promotes Dallas, and other Texas possibilities are endless, you guys are genius. Long Live Brad Thomas!!
