Josh McCown - QB QueryToday I heard former SMU QB Josh McCown interviewed on the Jim Rome radio show. The Cardinals are having a so-so year but McCown has four TD's and 1139 yards this season. I remember him having trouble while at SMU and then transferring to SHSU, where he threw for a zillion yards.
What is it about SMU's program that keeps QB's from succeeding? The university has recruited a number of talented quarterbacks over the years but they seem to have trouble finding success here. Is it the fault of coaches, the line, recievers or is there something in the water? I find it troubling that SMU is not able to capitalize on the talents of the athletes that choose to play here.
Considering Larry Fitzgerald wasn't quite as ready to step in and succeed as quickly as some thought (including myself), and considering Anquan Boldin's been out (best WR on the team), McCown has played extremely well out there. Good for him. Best of luck.
yeah he had a typical McCown day-2 TDs passing-one for Arizona and one that was intercepted and returned for a TD by his opponent. That's got to put him over 10-15 TDs thrown to his opponent in the last 5 years-truly an accomplishment. I don't know how you are judging McCown as having a pretty good year because he is in the lower 25% of the league in almost every category except for sacks where he stands out as the biggest sitting duck by miles with 18 sacks for a negative 166 yards.
Re:
Man, I'd think you had it in for former SMU quarterbacks who left the program if you weren't such a huge Submersed groupie.
Did you see McCown play for SMU. If you had, you'd know why he left. He was not mobile enough to avoid the rush. Cavan's line didn't apparently know how to pass block. So, he had a choice, stay and SMU and hope that line support improved, or go to 1-AA and rebuild his career. He chose the latter and improved his game enough to get to the NFL. He got drafted by a team that was about to lose its quarterback, so he got into a great situation for him At least until he decides to ask for more money from Mr. Bidwell who is tighter than a freshman co-ed. At that point he'll get cut and added as a back-up to some other team at the minimum.
I clicked on this thread just to see if/what Stallion had posted.
The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

Me too. I knew exactly what was coming ![]()
Funny - The Sporting News lauded McCown this week for almost exactly the same reasons "Thumper" mentioned (maybe he read the article?) They echoed Dennis Green's comments that he could be a star in the NFL. And those scouting reports are written by local beat writers who cover the teams every day - they know of what they speak.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Stallion hates to see his boy Cavan discredited!Stallion hates to see Josh doing well and playing regularly in the NFL.
The reason Stallion is so passionate about this? Josh doing well in the NFL blows Stallion's theory about his boy Cavan. While Josh starts in the NFL ---- Stallion still clings to the fantasy that Josh=Sucks, but Cavan is the man! Is Josh the next Joe Montana?----heck no!-----but Josh is a starter in the NFL----Stallion still cant admit that it was Cavan not Josh as to why Josh did not do well at SMU and said "bye bye". Josh didnt want to leave SMU, Josh didnt want to say "bye bye" to SMU, he was just frantically trying to get away from Cavan! Where would Josh be today if he had stayed with Stallion's boy Cavan? I doubt Josh would be a starter in the NFL. ![]() C-ya @ Milos!
I'm not trying to jump on the pile here. Stallion's got a lot of great things to say and is one of the ten or so on this board who have the depth of insight to keep an intelligent conversation going on. But he's absolutely blinded to the importance of good coaching. Josh was a solid Big 12 type prospect out of high school who had every tool to be successful at SMU.
I don't know if he was forced into playing too soon, or if his line was that bad that he couldn't succeed, or that his receivers couldn't get open or Cavan was calling plays which made him look bad. Whatever it was, he was not succeeding at SMU and I'm happy he's found a home in the NFL. There are a lot of adequate but not great quarterbacks in the NFL now, McCown is one of them. He's not going to change the game like an Elway or a Montana, but will have a career.
Re:
If SMU could recruit someone of Josh's caliber every 3-4 years, we would upgrade as a program. Kudos to Cavan for bringing in NFL talent like McCown and Garrett.
if you really think I was a Cavan lover then you have a simple mind that can't deal with complex thoughts. I had an agenda from day one to not let the simpletons on this board blame yet another coach for a much deeper problem. And tell me again who was wrong about Cavan? I sure as hell wasn't. 90% of you on this board claimed that SMU was underachieving under Cavan based on the talent on his teams. I told you SMU did not have the talent to compete on an even basis with its traditional and natural Rivals. You got the change in COACHING and have proceeded to enjoy a record of 4-28. Assuming it is ALL about COACHING then SMU is an EXTREMELY POORLY COACHED team.
