Marcus Mosley update

His journey spanned seven colleges, but former South Oak Cliff linebacker Marcus Mosley finally played in his first football game in six years, on Aug. 26 for Texas A&M-Commerce. Not exactly the path Mosley, The News' 1997 Defensive Player of the Year and a member of The News' 1998 National Top 100 list, had in mind when he arrived at SMU as one of the Mustangs' most heralded recruits in years.

Mosley, who recorded nine interceptions and 41 sacks at South Oak Cliff, selected SMU over UCLA, Miami and Nebraska. He redshirted, playing two games on special teams, and intended to transfer to Arkansas, but stayed only a few days in Fayetteville before learning that he wasn't eligible.

"I disappeared from everyone because I was depressed," Mosley said. "I know I wasn't using my potential."

He returned to Dallas, devoting himself to his studies and the weight room. Mosley attended classes part-time at Mountain View, Cedar Valley, Tarrant County and El Centro colleges, working toward a kinesiology degree, but never lost sight of his dream to get back on the field. He bulked up from 210 to 242 pounds and maintained contact with A&M-Commerce defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen. Mosley learned he was eligible in early August, arrived in Commerce on Aug. 12 and played two weeks later, recording two tackles against Southern Arkansas.

Division II rules allow a player 10 full-time semesters to play four seasons. Mosley used two at SMU, so now he is a 25-year-old freshman.

"That means I've got four more years to prove myself," Mosley said.

I never knew him, but I wish him well.

As I rember, he was a top 5 or 10 linebacker in the Nation. National top 100 and SMU was going up.

Maybe he'll join Chris Sanders and Josh McCown as "former SMU greats" in the NFL.

Now that would be depressing.

"great", "NFL" and Chris Sanders are three things that do not belong in the same sentence. But I do hear he was the greatest player in the history of Eastern Tennessee Mechanical and Janitorial College.
