What does the '89 team have to do with anything. Nobody cared about them then and certainly no one does now. Yuck it up at the reunion, boys, but nobody cares. If SMUers are gonna talk about what happened yesterday, it will be about successful teams with good players. And, as he proved on the Hilltop, Forrest Gump could not coach his way out of University Park. Absolutely a nice person, but a HIGHLY overrated coach. That coaching staff was a huge joke. Any flash-in-the-pan "success" was by accident. Give me Phil Bennett with a REAL rebuilding plan with some real hope for the future. You crybabies need to move on.

Say what you want about Forrest, he did not coach the team into the longest losing streak in school history! When was the last time a Phil Bennett coached SMU squad came back from a 20+ point deficit to win the game?

I understand the point you are trying to make, Stallion.

But if you're gonna make your point by insulting one player's effort or contribution, at least spell his name right (Hasson- not "Hassan"). By the way, the 'walk-on' Hasson has outscored damn near every scholarship player to date this season.

And here I thought Forrest Gregg coached a team into the Superbowl.

Rivals.com rates our recruits higher

Postby BrianTinBigD » Tue Oct 26, 2004 4:08 pm

According to Rivals, we consistently out recruited Boise St. since 2002. Looks like they are taking lesser talent and doing more with it. That is the difference that good coaching makes.

Let's see now...that would make our better recruiting classes what...freshman, redshirt freshman and sophomores. If only they could play like seniors and juniors...

What is giving you any idea that these guys will play any better as they get older? Might it be that by the time a player has been around this program for 3 years and is a junior, he is so used to losing that it just becomes accepted? There are very few players on this team that know what it takes to win at the D1 college level.

We all like to speak in generalities here, so I'm sure you won't mind my doing so now...most (maybe not all,but most) teams man their two deeps with juniors and seniors. There is a reason for that. Players do get better with age in college ball. They get bigger and stronger, they get more familiar with the schemes of their offense and defense. Bus has always advocated that linemen especially should not play until their later years so they have time to gain the weight and strength necessary for their positions.

Bennett has some really good players that he is redshirting right now that he probably is tempted every day to take their redshirts off to improve team performance, but he has the discipline to not do that because ultimately the team will be much better when we have a number of fifth year seniors playing as well as other upperclassmen like most of the better teams out there do. The waiting is agony and I'm sure it is for him too, but until we can get in the position of being able to redshirt whole freshman classes every year and play only upperclassmen including fifth year seniors, we will not be able to have the winning seasons we are all desparately waiting for regardless of who the coach is (IMHO).

One thing that makes me think the players will be better as they get older is that they not only will be bigger and stronger, but they clearly do not want to see Coach Bennett or his staff replaced. Unlike some trolls, I have talked to players -- three of them today -- and to a man they told me that they want to continue to work like hell to get better because they feel for the perdicament the coaches are in. These are players who clearly like and respect Coach Bennett and his staff, and will enjoy the spoils when they win for him.

How much longer can the alumni wait? It has been a very painful 15 years and the Bennett era has probably been the most painful time since football came back to the Hilltop. The biggest problem is that right now, there is nothing happening on the playing field to make anybody think that better days are ahead for SMU football. It is impossible to tell if all of these players being redshirted right now, are the difference between being competitive and getting blown out practically every game.

Your admission that "it's impossible to tell" underscores the fact that you don't know any more than the rest of the fans. And until you DO know that the guys who are on their way to the playing field can't play, try being positive and encouraging to those who are out there. These guys deserve our support and encouragement.

hey i think everybody was excited about Bennett coming to SMU. He is an inspirational speaker and he has recruited well according to this sight. Why people have become bitter, is simple to articulate. Most coaches that are turning around a program have the 0- win season in their first year not their second year and after bringing in 3 recruiting classes that were rated tops in their league or close to it 3 years in a row don't get pancaked by teams with losing records. bennett is playing in a watered down league and his record is the worst of every coach post the DP. The man has won 1 game in the last two years. That is pathetic no matter what league we are talking about. The bottom line his best performance has been with Cavan's recruits who he perpetually blamed for running the progrm into the ground and leaving the cupboard bare. Bottom Line: The salesman just might be peddling snake oil after all.

As I posted the other night, Boise State is officially the second youngest team in the nation. Our official designation as #1 does a little bit for me in terms of Bennett's case, but not a whole lot based on what I have personally witnessed.

Sir Trolls wrong

Postby Special_Delivery_Smu_Fans » Wed Oct 27, 2004 6:33 am

re: "Stallion, Everyone already knows that you do not go to the games. Instead, you curl up in your Oak Lawn apartment, sip wine, and gaze lustfully over the Rivals listings".

Thats funny Sirs Trolls, because I have seen Stallion at almost every SMU home game for years.

Stallion has stopped by our BLVD tent for a beer before every home game this year as well.

I was even on the same Southwest Airlines plane with Stallion awhile back to see the Mustangs play in Lubbock.

Say what you want about Stallion, but the guy attends SMU games religiously!
