I hope that Copeland is fired alongside Bennett, or else I think it is clear that Burns will be our next coach.
I'm with DiehardThe points Diehard Pony makes are valid. He does have the right...if not obligation...to voice his discontent. It would be nice to have 5000 Mustang Clubbers contributing at his level. Look around the country at other programs that have built, and you'll see similar powerful groups such as the one at HPUMC that was mentioned. Prime example: last year, New Mexico went to the LV bowl. They were to sell a certain # of tickets, but were 5,000 short. The Maloof family of Maloof Bottling bought 'em and either sold at a discount or gave 'em away. And guess what? When something goes on at UNM that the Maloofs don't like, people listen. The Lobos were once like us. In the early nineties they had ninety something hung on them in one game too (by Fresno St., no less)...and look at 'em now.
SMU needs 'fringe' groups, as it were...cliques here and there with common goals and missions, and a common unifying thread. You don't think I wouldn't love to have a Valley Mustang Club that would meet & [deleted] about things? Don't think for a second that I would discourage it.
You know the UMC was behind the academic clean-up that brought Pye in and put us in the football mess we now find ourselves. If the HPUMC faithful are upset at the sorry state of our football perhaps they might corner their pastor who is on the Board of Trustees. Or their Bishop, Dr. Moncure who is also on the Board of Trustees. Or the Kansas area Bishop who is on the Board of Trustees or the UMC representative on the Board of Trustees. Get the drift. If the HPUMC faithful don't like the direction of SMU football, they can do something about it. Hot box your pastor and get changes implemented regarding athlete friendly majors and transferable hours. I guarantee if his congregants make he and his Bishop feel the heat, they'll have more spine to stand up to the pointed headed faculty senate types.
EastStang, it sounds like you're on to something. I wish I would've known about the pull that bishops have...our local pastor left about two months ago after being elected the Missouri bishop & I'd have targeted him. All this is ironic, if as you say the UMC faithful were behind the Pye measures, since as churches go the UMC is generally less conservative than other more pro-football types.
As I recall the UMC fired the Board of Trustees, fired the Board of Governors, reasserted its control, appointed a new board because it was frankly embarrassed that a school with "Methodist" in its name was caught shamelessly cheating repeatedly.
Is the Methodist Church even associated with SMU anymore? Aren't we now just a private school with a churchy name? I haven't seen anyone in the Bishop's Box lately.
DHP: You have the right? How funny! Also, SMU had masses of empty seats throughout the Hayden Fry era (did not even sell out the Georgia Cotton Bowl), Dave Smith, Gregg, Rossley, and Cavan. What else is new? You get what you pay for. Want things to change?... PONY UP. No offense to Borden, but.... Got Salary?
