Link To Dallas Morning News (Fresno St. Preview)Sorry Fellas,
Even though it is our gameday, the DMN has chosen to run other stories again. What a sorry excuse for a sports page. Some of us would love to see an article about the QB controversy, Bennett, really anything. Players, please know that the alumni are with you no matter what. California may know how to party, but Texas sure can play football.
Your reading comprehension problems seem to apply to reading the newspaper too. This was in this morning's College Football Sports Day section
From the Dallas Morning News: Growth spurt could help SMU stand tall Mustangs aim to mature, gain confidence in last four games 06:00 PM CDT on Friday, October 29, 2004 By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News UNIVERSITY PARK – Four games remain in SMU's season, and coach Phil Bennett wants to see some results in this rebuilding program. "No question, we've got to prove we can play with confidence," he said. "The next four weeks is all about maturing." Bennett and the rest of the coaching staff are stumped by the Mustangs' lack of offense. SMU ranks last in the 10-team WAC in total offense and is 97th nationally. Today, the Mustangs take their average of 13.7 points per game to Fresno State in the hopes of ending a three-game losing streak. SMU's defense will have to rise to the challenge. In the last two losses, SMU has given up 85 points and 773 yards rushing. The Mustangs' run defense has allowed 240.4 yards per game, ninth in the WAC and 112th nationally. Bennett said several changes are in the works in the front seven. Reserve linebackers Avery Cleveland and Zach Hall are being inserted into a rotation of players. Walk-on linebacker Cliff Booker is getting more looks in practice. And the defensive line will see more of Charlie Berry, a sophomore from Highland Park, who is battling Justin Rogers at right end. "For us to be successful, we have to stop the run and not give up long passes," Bennett said. "At this point of the season, we should know what we're going to do." Fresno State has its own problems. The Bulldogs come in with a three-game losing streak. Fresno State has averaged 19.3 points per game during the losing streak, and quarterback Paul Pinegar has thrown 12 interceptions and only six touchdown passes this season. Backup quarterback Jordan Christensen took snaps with the second unit, and coach Pat Hill said Christensen could play if Pinegar has problems. E-mail [email protected]
Funny how that story was posted on Friday. Defend the DMN all you want, but papers like the Austin-American Statesman actually cover their local team. Dallas is currently a WAC town, and I would like to see some coverage about our team instead of front page coverage of OU-OSU.
Story Ideas for the DMN 1) How changing conferences will affect the program. 2) Bennett's failure to recruit the area. 3) Possible Candidates for Bennett's job (Mack Brown puts up with this, and he wins 10 games a year) 4) Player Profiles: The players should not be blamed for playing for a lousy coach.
Just reading the post about how we hope our young team can mature in the last four games. Watching the Boise State-Hawaii game last night and the announcer said that Boise has the second youngest team in the nation! Apparently there are young players who can play and then there are our young players!
Are you insane? Even the 75205 area code isn't a WAC town!
Pay attention. The paper has discussed this many times and it wil get covered even more when the move actually occurs.
The paper hasn't run one serious article about candidates to replace Mack just like it didn't before Cavan was fired. Maybe a columnist broods about it here or there, but unless you know for a fact that the coach is gone it's just needless speculation and it ruins a relationship between the paper and the school and coach. You want to speculate come to this board. Congratulations, genius. While I personally like Stallions posts I think you have replaced him as the least liked (not to mention least informed) poster on this board. Tell him what he's won, Johnny!
Re:
Judging by our record, one could question Bennett's recruiting. Which recruits are truly making a difference in how this team is performing?
Re:It was posted on their web site at 6 PM Friday. It is a Morning paper...it was in the Saturday morning newspaper...would you have felt better if they didn't post it to their web site until after midnight so the date is the same as the day it is in the paper? Why do I feel like I've awakened in the middle of a showing of "Dumb and Dumber"?
Re:I concede your point, due to my location I am unable to secure a hard copy of the DMN. Because it was only in the SMU Collegeday section, it was rather hard to find this morning on the website. That being said, even if I was able, I would never purchase that rag. Anti-SMU sentiments are never welcome in my home.
You still have not answered the more provoking question. This is one of the biggest games in WAC country, why is talk of OU-OSU overshadowing a game that could potentially turnaround our program? The sad fact is that UT and OU recruiting gets better coverage in the DMN than our games. ![]()
Re:
How is this game between a program that has only had one win in 19 games and a team that is suddenly underachieving one of the biggest games in WAC country? How would this game potentially turnaround the SMU program?
Re:
To save his job, Bennett has to beat a good team and show some progress. Although they are underachieving, Fresno is still a good program. Beating a team like Fresno would signal to recruits that we will begin to attempt to take on local teams like Tech or OSU. C'mon Ponysnob, even you must hate to see your alma mater ignored in the hometown paper.
Re:
While I do wish that SMU got more local coverage, with the way that our program has performed, it is not really warranted. I think that if this team could string together some wins and truly show that things are headed in the right direction, positive press would happen. I am not sure that one win over a 3-3 Fresno St team shows recruits that we are ready to take on Tech and OSU. This program has yet to show that it can compete with Rice, La Tech and TCU.
Re:Like I have said many times, time to switch captains.
Re:The funny thing is that I am regularly called an idiot for even suggesting Bennett be fired. In my own mind, human decency dictates it. Copeland will hire Burns.
