GWB at Moody on Monday

Postby MustangSally » Fri Oct 29, 2004 9:29 pm

Students got an email saying that Monday night, November 1st, there will be a Republican campaign rally in Moody Coliseum, with President George Bush and First Lady (AND FELLOW PONY) Laura Bush. The Mustang Band will be on hand providing some quality Mustang Jazz, and the event will be on national TV.

Also, if W wins the election, the band will be marching in its second Inaugural Parade in the streets of Washington DC.

Regardless of your political persuasions, this is a huge deal for SMU to host the President of the USA on the night before his possible reelection. I think the university is really pushing for that library, it would be nice to have that on our campus!

Politics aside, this rally confuses me. What's the purpose of coming to SMU the night before the election? Dallas is the epicenter of Bush Country - he doesn't need to campaign here to win Dallas County or anything. Or is he coming under the belief that the voters already will have made their decision, so he's in town to campaign for Republicans running in local races? Not saying I don't want him to visit. But the strategy behind it eludes me.

I wouldn’t say that Dallas is the epicenter of Bush country. I believe Dallas County is only 35 percent Republican. Although I'm sure he gets a large chunk of change from the Park Cities.

It is kinda weird he'd be in Texas the night before the election where he already has our 34 electoral votes in the vault. Perhaps it does have something to do with the Frost/Sessions race.....but I’d think W would be more concerned about Ohio, NJ and Florida than Frost/Sessions???

BTW, Martin Frost is the man for District 32!!!

He is following the same strategy as Ronald Reagan, who ended his 1984? campaign at Moody as well.

Presidents typically don’t campaign on Election Day, but it will provide a good media clip for Tuesday airing. W. in front of a large, adoring crowd…what better place to stage this than Dallas, Texas.

You have to think we are the favorites to get that library.

He will probably be on his way to his ranch outside of Crawford, TX where he has to go to vote. 10 pm the night before the election...if he hasn't made his case for re-election by then it won't matter anyway...what's a better way to end a long campaign then in the midst of friends in what was for awhile his home town?

He wants to be in front of a friendly crowd the last night of the campaign, and say raw meat kind of things that can only be said in front of a really friendly crowd so that they are picked up on the 10:00 news. By the way I've heard from inside pollsters that Hawaii and California are now in play which explains why Arnold joined Bush in Ohio yesterday. After Bin Laden's back-hand endorsement of Kerry yesterday, things seem to be breaking toward Bush in the final hours of this campaign. There may not need to be any recounts. The early litmus will be Pennsylvania. If Bush carries Pa., its all over, if not its going to be close.

I don't know if anyone heard about the Redskins prediction. Apparently, if the Redskins win their last home game before the election then the incumbent wins, if they lose then the challenger wins the presidency. Well Green Bay beat Washington at Washington today, so according to the story Kerry will win the election. Supposedly it has never been wrong. Of course anyone who thinks this will be over on Teusday is kidding his/herself.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

Hey, watch the Florida comments. Did you know that the largest state representation outside of Texas at SMU is Florida? That's right, something like 19% of us are here, mwahahaha!

Those comments about Bush as a 'C' student really bother me. Politics aside, only a fool would call someone stupid who graduated from Yale. Most of the people who make such comments couldn't last at Yale even if their daddies got them in too.

Remeber:
4.0 at SMU < graduation from Yale. hmm... maybe this has to do with our population of Floridians.....
