Unless your team currently has good players, expect a few losing seasons in the Big East. It takes a few years to get up to speed here. The Big East is brutal ! UCONN went 9 - 9 in the Big East last year and won the National Champioship ! Some teams like DePaul and USF get beat up real bad in the Big East . But eventually they'll turn around and be good teams. So be patient. Just be glad your joining the best college basketball conference in America. The ACC grabbed Syracuse and Pitt because ACC basketball stinks !! Everybody keeps talking about Football, The ACC grabbed those 2 schools to make their basketball better. And if the BE gets Air Force, Navy, Boise State , Central Florida, Houston, and SMU, who needs Syracuse and Pitt. Guaranteed if we get all those teams we'll get a much bigger TV contract then was previously offered. The whole country watches Air Force and Navy and Notre Dame plays both of them. Notre Dame currently plays 2 BE teams a year . With Air Force and Navy it'll be 4 . And Notre Dame has 3 swing games they can schedule with BE teams.
I'm not familiar with SMU athletics, can you give me a brief history ? How many times did you go to the NCAA's in basketball ? and how's your football ? Obviously your school must have good athletics , otherwise the BE wouldn't be interested. How's Houston ? Never heard of that school. Good basketball/ football ?
Hope your school gets an Invite from the BE. They wouldn't publically announce these 5 schools if they weren't confident the schools would accept the invitations.

a brief history of smu athletics:
football: we used to be good, then we got the death penalty, then we were bad for 25 years, now we are getting good again.
basketball: we suck.

The bb team is a young team with some talented new freshmen, redshirt freshmen and transfers. They are not ready for the Big East now, but hopefully by the time we get there we'll be at least competitive.
If you like soccer, golf or swimming, we usually produce nationally competitive teams/individuals in those sports.

You clearly don't know much about the hoops program. We're every bit as talented in hoops as football, if not moreso. We're rapidly improving in both sports

SMU has won national championships in football (1935, 1981, 1982), track & field (1983 and 1986 outdoor, 1983 indoor), and golf (1954). We have been to the final four in basketball.
Doak Walker won the Heisman for us.

Hoopmanx, just curious. What's your short- and medium-term expections for SMU hoops?
Ha, I know the individual talent a lot better than I have a feel for these guys as a team. So much of the princeton is chemistry and buying in. Obviously, gonna take a minute to figure out a way to replace Dia, and to a lesser extent Mangrum. That said, this is the most talented team since the Sasser/Ross/Hancock/Davis years, just very light on experience. We return two starters, and have 9 new rotation kids. Nobody knows if Nick Russell will get cleared? Nobody knows what Leslee looks like when he comes back? That's before all the normal questions like how quickly will the frosh contribute? Does Ricmonds offer anything w/his back to the basket, or is he face-up big, that can spot up shoot and crash for put backs? Anyway, I get why the prognosticators have us picked back-end of CUSA, but they really have no idea. You have to predict low when the whole team is new. That doesn't mean we'll end low. We can beat any team on the schedule, just need to see this group first. Worth considering is that CUSA seems pretty strong this year. Not too many programs trending down. We've had this system for 1.5 years, but never had the horses. Now we have horses. I want to see this team learn on the fly and fight every damn night. No reason we shouldn't aim for 20. Something tells me they won't get there, but get close. If we're in CUSA the year after that, I think 22ish. All bets are off w/regards to the Big East. We'll need a very large '13.

Of course if we move to the BE, we won't be seeing the NCAA's for a few years. We are talented, but Louisville, WVA, GT, UConn, Nova, MQ, ND, Prov., SH, St. J., are quite a murder's row.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Yea, they will be a problem lol. That said, our style will be troublesome in that league, much like Gtowns has been. What we really need is a little less finesse, and a few more bruisers that take your head off and bump you into the front row. We're far too soft for the big east right now.

are there gonna be 17 basketball schools? I don't see how the math works if UCF, SMU and Houston each get all sports invites.

btw, i think we all know it will take us some time to compete at a high level in the big east...thanks for posting though SJ.
our recruits, however, seem to be up to par to start competing earlier than many would expect. i love the direction were headed as a program.
