Reed was activated and on kickoff coverage, but wasn’t the returner – the job he held before going down against the Tennessee Titans. Instead, Baltimore went with Bryan McCann, who they signed during the bye, as their kickoff returner.
“David could have gone, but since Bryan had practiced all week and David was coming off the shoulder, we didn’t want to jeopardize him if we didn’t have to,” Harbaugh said.
“I think it will be a good competition between those two guys. We’ll just put them both out there in practice and in games and see who can earn the job ultimately.”
McCann averaged 26.5 yards on two kickoff returns against the Texans. Harbaugh was impressed with his acceleration, as well as his work as a gunner on special teams.
