Will the New Big East be as good as the Big 12 ?

Post by SJU87 »

I've been going back and forth reading UCF, SMU and UH forums and I'm reading alot of Posts from Louisville fans who wanna bolt to the Big 12.
So I ask this question, which conference would be better after the Big East adds 6 new teams ?
I'm not a College football fan because my school , St. John's , doesn't have a football team  and I know nothing about football.
To me, the new Big East would have better markets and a national audience with Navy , Air Force and games with Notre Dame. The Big East will have a presence in Texas, Florida, the Mid West , the West and the East. The NYC metro area adds a large audience too.
So why would Louisville and West Virginia leave ? Will they make more money in the Big 12 ? WV is the best football team in the Big East now, why would they go to the Big 12 and be second fiddle to Texas ? Schools wanna leave the B12 because of Texas, why would WV and Louisville wanna get into a situation like that ?

I agree with you. I think the BE will be more stable than the Big 12. But people smarter than me are better at looking 5 moves ahead. Our job is to first get into the AQ and then plan the future from there.

No.

The Big East, whether as it is now or with additional teams, is lightyears away from providing what the Big XII can provide, with or without Missouri.

there are only 1-2 Big East teams that may not jump within months-USF and MAYBE Cincy. Assuming Big 12 signs agreement that assigns Big 12 Revenue to Conference for 6 years then the Big 12 is easily more stable. All bets off if that agreement is not signed

I don't know what the payout differences are between the two conferences so I can't address that part of your question. Not too many of the big 12 teams are happy with UT. Some of us older SMU fans who remember the old SWC would be happy getting into the big 12 to be conference mates again with those old SWC teams and it is attractive to us because it is regional, but in many ways the BE sounds promising as a good conference for us to be in. I think UL and UWV should think long and hard before jumping into bed with UT and some of the other big 12 schools.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

The Big 12 will blow up in the future, that's just fact with UT running the show. Big East may be the better option at this point. Lets just get into an AQ conference and see what this team can do.

Both conferences are vulnerable right now. That's not the issue.

But the Big XII has a few schools, even if it is ISU, Baylor, KSU, OSU, and yes, UT, that want the conference (and frankly, just those weaker schools are about as good as the BE right now) The Big East doesn't - every single school, bar none, would move out of it right now if a bid came for it and many of them are actively working RIGHT NOW to make that happen.

That, and location and history make all the difference in the world. You want to play OU or UConn? TT or Cincy? It's not close.

ill take Cincy over TT any day. I dont think there is as big a difference as you might think The bottom of that conference is not good. KU, ISU and and Baylor are not any better then anyone in the new Big East. Almost any of the new teams could beat those three soundly.

People need to pause and do the math. take Big 12 current contract and compare to new BE contract plus basketball revenue and there is not much if any difference. Why lousiville or WV would want to expand their travel to be UT's whipping boy for no extra money is puzzling.

I disagree with you immensely about Cincy and TT, but you are right about the TV contract. If Mizzou leaves, that could seriously cripple the Big XII TV contract.
Keep in mind, I compared the historical bottom-feeders - BU, etc. - of the Big XII to the BE best. The best of the BE doesn't compare to the best of the Big XII. Baylor, I believe, would win the BE this year.
But the difference will show itself in things like ticket sales and overall interest. We talk about having to move games out of Ford to accomodate Oklahoma, Texas, etc. We'll be able to charge more per ticket, too, I believe. That won't have to happen against WVU, USF, etc. I saw the game with UL at Cincy last week - there were TONS of empty seats, even in an 65,000 seat NFL stadium, and those are traditional rivals. The Big XII WILL bring more money and more interes from everybody involved.
