Quarterbacks

Postby BleedingRed+Blue » Fri Mar 08, 2002 8:20 pm

I'm not so sure we should be ready to write off Kelan Luker just yet. Coach Bennett has said he wants to use some option, but it's not as if he's coming in with the intention of turning any of the Ponies' QBs into Michael Bishop, who has a great arm but also ran a 4.3 40 -- Bishop was like a running back who could throw as much as he was a quarterback who can run. The option will be only part of the equation on offense, so I think Luker will at least be given a fair shot at retaining the starting position.

That's true, Coach Bennett won't be asking for Bishop-like performances from his QBs, but if Bartel and Nixon have the height, arm strength and speed I've been reading about, I'd think they have to have the upper hand. Luker's experience advantage will be diminished by the fact that everyone has to learn a new system.

I think Luker just does not have the advantage of the other three quarterbacks when it comes to their mobility, which will be critical - whether in an option game or in the spread formation throwing off of the run. Thats right! I said other three, NEVER, forget about Tate Wallis - he could be the diamond in the rough.

let's just hope someone on the roster can find a way to move the ball and not turn it over. More than anything, we need an offensive leader who will not give games away. How many times has our defense fought their guts out only to watch an offense go "three and out" or worse yet, turn the ball over in poor field position?

CharlestonPony hit the nail on the head - what did we have last year, 30 turnovers or so?

I don't think anyone has forgotten ProudPonyPa...I know I haven't, but right now we are talking spring practice and the two new kids won't be here for that. Come July and the picture will probably change somewhat...don't you think???
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
