Defensive tackles

Post by SMUguy »

I hear Lute Croy and Warrie Birdwell are lighter, by 20 or 30 pounds, and leaner than they've been since they got to SMU, and are stronger than ever. Big year for both.

we certainly need both of these guys to have monster senior years. Croy can afford to drop some pounds, but I didn't think Birdwell had that much to lose. Hope Walker will be ready for Division I football, since he figures to be in the tackle rotation as well. After those three, who gets playing time on the interior DL? Unless one of this year's recruits can step right in or Adami has beefed up, we really need Croy, Birdwell & Walker to stay healthy.

Lute Croy has lost weight. Warrie Birdwell has lost weight. Thornton Chandler has lost weight. Sterling Harris has lost weight. D.D. Lee has lost weight. Kris Briggs has lost weight. Trent Hrncir has lost weight.

And from what I hear, none of them have lost strength - added strength. Nice work, Diesel!

Any word on Marcus Walker's workouts, or how he looks in preparation for spring ball?

Walker's feet are still two of the slowest out there, however, the grapevine tells me that the kid is a gamer. Hope we get the chance to see him.

He can't be THAT slow - he did make all-state in Louisiana as a senior. I'm anxious to see him in the fall.

I still think that with as thin as we are on the defensive line, Darrin Johnson should get a look at defensive tackle, even as a true freshman. He isn't exactly a sprinter, and with that size and strength, he and Lute Croy and Warrie Birdwell and Marcus Walker could make us pretty strong in the interior of the defensive line.
