Tate Wallis

Postby Hoofprint » Fri Mar 15, 2002 6:45 pm

What position is this guy going to play? He was signed as a quarterback, and there was talk last year that he ran with the scout team at WR, TE, DB and every other position except running out on the field to get the tee after Walterscheid kicked off.

Is he in the mix at QB? I hear he's more mobile than Luker, Bartel or Nixon, but I admit I've never seen the guy. (Maybe I have - I went to a lot of practices last year, I just didn't know his number or what position he was playing on a given day.) My guess is that within two years, Jaimey Harper is our starting QB.

I don't remember Wallis ever playing DB.

Tate Wallis ran a no-huddle spread offense in high school. Not only does he have a strong, accurate arm and good mobility, he's also a very smart quarterback. He's very adept at reading defenses, picking up disguised coverages and checking off a hot receiver when his primary and secondary targets are covered. He's very quick to locate a third or fourth receiver, and can spot seams in the defense if he needs to tuck the ball and run. He wasn't heavily recruited, but Wallis is an excellent quarterback.

From what I hear, Wallis doesn't have the arm strength Bartel and Luker do, but he's a smart player who makes great decisions, and he has really caught the eye of the coaching staff. Perhaps he's the man when SMU sinks Navy?
