Boulevard StuffIf i'm not mistaken, wasn't this policy in place since the San Jose St game? Or is it the requirement of the bartender at tents that has people considering this "boycott?" I remember seeing students with wrist bands at the SJST game so why is this suddenly a story?
With regards to a boycott... I don't see how that accomplishes a whole lot. To boycott something, you have to first have something concrete on which to focus your anger. What is it in the case? Are you boycotting the school not allowing underage drinking? The inconvenience of a wrist band? What exactly is it? I'm just curious. I can respect a boycott if there is some injustice being done, but I'm wondering where it is in this case. Plenty of bars check your ID at the door and put a wristband on you. They put a big X on you if you're underage. You drink if you have the wristband on and you sneak around and try to hide from the bouncers if you're under 21 and trying to drink. Once again, I'm curious about the perceived slight here. You know, bartenders aren't such a bad thing at all. At the Mustang Club Young Alumni tent, everyone gets a wrist band before they get a beer and the bartender (TABC certified) serves everyone; people don't get their own drinks. Granted, we don't have membership under 21 anyway. Nevertheless, we seem to have a very good time in spite of this. Please come by out trailer (the one with the TV's in front of the Natatorium) and observe if you will. being organized and working within the system can work.
There aren't that many students at the games anywayA Greek boycott won't be very noticable since there aren't that many students at the games anyway.
Sam I Am
Now Sam, I will disagree with you there...a lack of Greeks at the Boulevard would be a very bad thing. With a school like SMU where nearly half of the undergrad students are Greek and 99.9% of the social scene revolves around them, it is absolutely imperative that Greeks be on the Boulevard and at the games. I am curious about the earlier comments about this boycott but I am by no means anti-Greek nor do I wish for their absence on gameday.
You know it is against the law to require ID of anyone under 25 before serving them alcohol and the University might just feel, it needs to attempt to comply with the law. It might just be that the university lawyers told them they needed to do this at least to try and show that they are trying to comply with the law. That way when a liquored up co-ed wakes up the next morning and screams rape, the University can say, hey we complied with the law and that person circumvented the law.
Give our students a little credit. They will find a solution to the problem. If they want to down a few beerz on the boulevard, they'll find a way.
The bracelets you had been seeing were being given out by bartenders at each fraternity's tent and most of them were not even checking ids in order tog et the bracelets.
Apparently, our alumni frat guys have been falling down on the job of educating their younger brothers on the fine art of hiding hootch. A coke bottle with rum and coke looks like a coke. A ginger ale bottle with bourbon and ginger ale looks like a ginger ale. A bottle of tropicana with vodka looks like OJ. Tequila in a water bottle looks like water (albeit flammable water). A flask hidden in the small of your back and held there by your belt is rarely discoverable if you wear a sweater unless someone pats you down. Seniors must buy booze for their younger brothers. Don't breath into the face of a rent-a-cop. Don't drink and drive. Remember these lessons grasshoppers.
Re: There aren't that many students at the games anyway
Don't forget they'll be there until the king and queen are announced and then they'll leave.
I can't think of much of anything more idiotic than "boycotting" games you don't show up at anyway because someone is checking IDs (as required by law) and not allowing those under 21 to drink (which is prohibited by law).
Get over it. Every bar you go to instead of going to football games (and upcoming basketball games) is going to do the same thing. If you can get around it, great.
According to my son, there were a number of incidents involving students on campus. A nasty fight ensued between two greeks, and a third "innocent" greek was walking by and was seriously injured. His parents are suing for $300-400,000 and the kid was pretty hurt. This incident and the "goal post" injury involving students that were obvious more than just high on football, put both the greeks and university in a position they had to do something.
He is personally upset about the new rules, but figures they will get around them...but, students that have had too much will be picked-up, especially if they are underage. In a way, the upperclassman will provide, but they better realize they have a responsibility to those they "serve" or matters will be made more formal. I am all for on campus drinking--"keep them out of the cars", but I don't know how to deal with those students that get so drunk they are dangerous to one another.
First of all that lawsuit you are talking about has been settled. Second of all sounds like a boycott may no longer being happenigg, b/c the greeks do not want to let down the alumni that are coming to town, so they will do whatever possible to show them a good time. Also I was informed by a friend on IFC that the new rules are going to be adapted b/c of the backlash and the nuissance it was going to cause for the students as well as the staff who would have to man the table to give out the braclets and check ids.
Thanks for the update, my son only talks to us once or twice a month--he wants us to act as though he is at a California school and leave him alone--which we promised to do when he selected SMU over Pepperdine. Secondly, I felt sure that there would be compromise and things would make sense. I am sure the university is between a rock and a hard place on this underage drinking, as the Blvd. is the best thing to happen to the school and alumns in years.
