C-USA West Tie-Breaker???
Suppose we win out in conference play, beating Houston (I know a complete long shot)... If us and Houston both have 1 conference loss, would we go to the championship because we beat them??? I am trying my best to sound positive and salvage the season... I know there is no shot at the Top 25 anymore...

Yes, the first tie-breaker is head-to-head

Yes, if we beat them and have the same conference record we would go

Yes, if we win out we have the best record in the West and go to the championship (we'd be tied with UH with one loss in conference and own the head-to-head). Probably against USM who looks like they will come out of the east. We might get a rematch after all is said and done!

See the Silver Lining Awards thread. We win out, we are in the Championship. You have to factor Tulsa in the mix also.

Still control our own destiny, as they say.
One week at a time, though. Beat Tulsa.

USM up tempo got to us a little. I can't imagine what Tulsa and Houston are going to do.

At least we got another shot at a ranked team... 2 out of 3 wins over ranked opponents wont look too bad!

Re: C-USA West Tie-Breaker???
i don't think we need to worry about a tie-breaker. if we play cougar high like we played last night they will hang 50+ on us. It really bothers me that our coaching staff has yet to figure out an effective defense against teams that run the hurry-up offense. We saw the same problems last year and have seen it again this year.

If the d plays like they did last night and creates 2 turnovers we will beat Houston....
Loss was not on the d last night they played excellent vs a very potent offense...

Re: C-USA West Tie-Breaker???
Defense played acceptable-could have still won with the usual offensive production. But a key difference in the game was 3rd/4th Down Conversions
USM 9/15
SMU: 4/14
That helped Southern Miss run 23 more plays than SMU. SMU only ran 59 plays-very low

SMU still controls it's own destiny and would probably face USM again in Hattiesburg for the CUSA championship if we win out. That's the goal at this point
