i think it's a good idea. things like this are where a school with an endowment like ours can have an edge.

Can we just start actually paying them already? Nothing like a "student-athlete" getting a free education and another $100,00 on top of that. I think we could out bid a lot of our competition if they would just turn us loose.

we've proven that we can outbid. that's why they tattled on us.

i sometimes sit and wonder what would happen today if an alumni (not the school/coaches/etc) got caught doing something. like the cam newton deal where an alum paid his dad, and kept school/student athlete in the dark. or even like reggie bush where all they got was no bowls and a few less scholly's for a couple years.

The answer for most places is a slap on the wrist. For us, probably another death penalty.

Let's look at this from another way. Suppose you have a son or daughter that you send to SMU and you ONLY pay the room and board and tuition and nothing else and tell her or him they are not allowed to work to make spending money. Remember there is limited dormitory space except for fr so would you tell your child that 6-8 kids could share expenses with a 2 bedroom apt? Who pays for the transportation to and from home, to and from class, dental checkups, health insutrance, car expenses if you have one, gas, auto insurance, health insurance, clothing, shoes, grooming, laptop, lab fees, parking fees if you have a car, laundry, food for when school not in session, going out with friends. Basically this is what the NCAA is trying to update so that the "real cost of attending a college" is covered.$2,000 a semester is about 1/2 of what is needed. Those of you who say the parents can help out aren't aware of the "world" some student-athletes come from. There is NO money. Pell grants could help too though.

$2,000 is nothing. It doesn't solve anything. What is $2,000 is Dallas, LA, Miami? What is it in Wyoming, Cleveland, Stillwater? What does $2,000 do if I grew up in Woodville, TX but want to go to school in Hawaii? Barely covers my travel expenses one way. Ridiculous.

Let's just get the charade of amateur athletes over with. Let's just start paying everyone, and not the same across the board but to whatever the school wants to pay the most for a kid. Let the kid decide who they want to work for based on pay. No salary cap either. Might as well start a college athletes union and bring in agents. At least we get it out and in the open.

Not nearly enough. I believe in free enterprise ... college (and definitely college sports) is a business. Athletes (primary FB and BB players) bring in huge dollars (especially the really good ones) ... $2k is a start but not nearly enough ... they need a stipend minimum ... and don't give me "they got a scholarship" crap ... so did I, but I didn't bring in any money to SMU (now I do as an alum but not then) and I WORKED all through college -- these guys can't even do that nor should they have to (their sport is their work and they should be compensated accordingly) ... NCAA sucks ... basically slave labor - works these guys to the bone and benefit handsomely without paying them (isn't that the definition of 'slavery'?) ... ok, i'm done ...

What if a student athlete costs the university more than they bring in? Such as scholarship money, tutor expenses, equipment and travel expenses, etc. Can we get them to then pay the university?
