Ashton Nixon - to WR?

Postby SMUguy » Sun Mar 24, 2002 6:14 pm

He looked a million times better at practice the first day than he did last year - more confident throwing the ball, and a whole lot bigger and stronger, and now he's moving to receiver? Maybe it's viewed as a straight-up trade for Tate Wallis. I can't help but think the receivers will be better, because there are so many of them, they have to be pushing each other.

Off the top of my head, I come up with Comet, Cardwell, Ford, Freeman, Taylor, Griffin, Vinson, Nixon, Joeckyl, and I'm sure I'm missing one or two. That's nine wideouts, and only Taylor, I think, could be redshirted (but won't). Even the older guys are going to have to work hard to fight off the young guys. When we go to a 4-WR set, this group looks like it's got a lot of talent.

Story I heard was that Ashton asked to be moved to WR....said he felt more comfortable there.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Look at the size we have at WR.

Jay Taylor is closer to 6-5 than 6-4.
Billy Ford is somewhere between 6-3 and 6-4.
Cedric Vinson is 6-1 or so.
Ashton Nixon is 6-2.

How would you like to be an opposing secondary coach and see that group of big guys line up across from your small DBs?

I never thought we would be able to say we had size at receiver. I know Comet and Cody will do great as well.
