Would Notre Dame be willing to save the BE in football?
Certainly they could, but is there any chance Notre Dame would be WILLING to save the Big East in football? I realize that if that was going to happen it probably would have happened already, but why are they just so comfortable sitting back and watching the conference they play their non-fb sports implode?
Other than money, is it the "association" factor in that they don't want to be linked to schools like Cincy and USF? Could the addition of BYU and SMU possibly change that? I would be willing to bet that the Big East could get a solid network sports deal if Notre Dame were to join in fball that would make it worth NDs while.
Seems like Notre Dame could be the big savior here and rescue the Big East with a stroke of the pen. The question is, why are they not willing to at least explore it?

Because they don't have to. They already have the best TV contract in college football and the best BCS deal out there.
When was the last time a team "helped" another one anyway? It's every man for himself out there...that's reality.

Well, I realize that, but they might be able to actually improve their position.

Notre Dame has nothing to worry about as there are 8 non-football members in the Big East. If those members decided to break off from the football members they could do so whenever they please and still be a tremendous league with great TV contract.

They have explored it and they came to the conclusion that they don't care. There will always be a home for their non-revenue sports.

Okay, you're right Phil Bennett. It's probably not even worth your time recruiting 4 and 5 stars. We should all just be content in loserville.

It's pretty simple why they won't really, they have their own Network TV contract. They site ethical differences with the Big Ten as the reason they are a member of the Big East except in Football. Question is if the Big East falls the rest of the way apart where are Notre Dame's non revenue sports gonna go? Big 12? CUSA? The MAC maybe? I mean siting the ethical differences they have with the Big Ten and all.

Like I said, the Big East may fall apart as a football conference, but it will always exist in some capacity as a great basketball conference.

I can use my stomach as a flotation device. So in that way I'm self sufficient.

Well, Gary Patterson USED to help us all the time. But he's not helping us any more, PERIOD.
