One step closer to calling college athletes what they are: professionals.

If I was a college athlete, I'd hold out of for more. $2,000 is chump change.

Not if they don't meet the minimum threshold for paying taxes in the first place.

But if they include all the free tattoos and other benefits, they got to be getting close.

So on a serious note. It is taxable?
I understand that they are going to have to meet a minimum requirement of income made throughout the year in order to pay taxes. But does this count towards that? Just interested.
Overall, dumb idea NCAA. Dumb. That will do absolutely nothing to deter the practices you are trying to stop. I expect more video games, iPads, and beer purchased.

I agree. We should pay more.

How many scholarships does SMU give out in all mens sports? 120-150? Wow. This adds nearly $600,000 to our budget when you factor on Title IX. No kidding all the BCS conferences will approve this, it makes it nearly $1M more expensive to have an athletics program (some schools have more Men's sports than SMU)...talk about pay-to-play. Troy and Middle Tennessee must be freaking out.
What does a multiple-year scholarship do to SMU? Does it prevent schools like UT from making sweet nothing promises to 2-3 five-star QBs every year? How common is it to just be dropped from your scholie?

Once this door is opened, there is no closing it. This is the beginning of the end for collegiate sports as we have known it for a hundred years. The NCAA and the big schools are turning the athletes into professionals and they will not be able to prevent more and more gifts and payments because of this terrible move.
Long live Inez Perez!

Probably the more important legislation-for which the NCAA should be applauded:
"In addition, the board agreed to increase eligibility requirements for incoming freshmen and junior college transfers. Both groups needed a 2.0 GPA to be eligible. Now, high school grads will need to maintain a 2.3 GPA in the 16 core courses and take 10 of those core classes before their senior year. Junior college players will have to maintain a 2.5 GPA and the NCAA will limit the number of physical education credits that will count toward eligibility."
Also note NCAA will increase APR requirements in a stair step fashion from 900 to 930 APR over a 4 year period. SMU will need to address this as we were well below the new standards in both FB and BB for the last reporting year(although not for the multiple reporting window period)
Now we all know there are ways to keep many players eligible but these academic changes in the most recent years are starting to really level the playing field for all schools. BTW the JUCO route and the diploma mill route to eligibility especially just got much tougher
