Nevada Gets Big Commit from Our Backyard

Postby Stallion » Sat Nov 06, 2004 12:48 pm

C Jeremy Mayfield(6-9,232) Irving McArthur who Bob Gibbons calls perhaps the most underrated big man in the Country committed to Nevada this week. Gibbons says that when the final ratings are in Mayfield will be a definite Top 50 National player and one of the Top 6 Centers in America. Were we ever recruiting this guy? If you add Mayfield to the long list of National Top 50 and National Top 100 players from the Metroplex this has to be one of the top classes EVER from DFW-and SMU got shutout.

I remember when Dave Bliss came to SMU and announced a strategy of tryig to get one of the top Dallas prospects to "stay home" every year. He recognized there was enough talent in the area that by just keeping one guy home each year, he could field a top 25 caliber team. I think his 1st recruit was Reggie Pink.

Coach Tubbs will be successful if he can do the same, but we can't expect miracles overnight. Need to show the local guys that SMU can win and just as important, fill all those empty seats at Moody when they do start winning. Who wants to play for a 25 win team that has only 1500 coming out to watch? Let's hope this year's team performs to their potential and the SMU community and Dallas' college basketball fans take notice. That combination could give Tubbs a foot in some doors that he didn't have this year.

Right you are - when schools started to recruit these top players, Coach Tubbs was an assistant coach on Coach Sampson's bench in Norman. He's going to get good local players to stay - have faith. For his first year, he might have to go through other areas to get players, but he's already in on good players for next year.

who do you think was doing the Texas recruiting for Sampson. I guarantee you Tubbs contacted all 15 of those kids and visited with at least 10.

Stallion,

First... SMU does have a local recruit (committment...but not announced) but you do not know about at this point.

Secondly, at this time, Tubbs does not officially have a ship open for next year. Be kinda hard to sign a NLI without a sure place to put him.

Tubbs will be fine in local recruiting. Now let's just see you in the house tonight to watch the game against the African team.

The DMN said the African team has two guys who are 6'11" -- worth recruiting? Eligible?
