That is patently ridiculous.
One would think so, but it came straight from a person who served on that committee. You can chose to believe me or not.

Your source is not very reliable then. Lamar Hunt may delegate the grunt work to Copeland, but he is going to say what he thinks and back it up with his wallet. Hunt needed a place for his soccer team and pulled out his wallet in renovated Ownby. He was even out watering the grass. That is not the type of guy who is going to say "yessir Mr. Copeland, whatever you want Masser Copeland." The answer was that the Committee was sold on Bennett as the best candidate for the job. Remember the pickings were pretty slim, Bennett, Charley Waters were the best of the bunch, Holtz (jr.), had taken himself out of the running.

Again, I am only relating what I was told by a person who sat on the Bennett and the Cavin committees. He also told me that Copeland did not even both to call several of the candidates that were raised by Committee members, including Tommy Bowden who took the job at Tulane and led them to an undefeated season. He describes Copeland as "hard headed".

this has no relevence to this thread other than a personal pet peve.
SAM - when referring to others as in "you all" you should correctly shorten it to read "y'all" not "ya'll"
If you are going to act like a Texan, get it right.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Amen! L Hunt gives orders not takes them. I too have talk to members of the committee and I don't get the same picture. In addition I believe a number of sources wre used to make informal inquires to several persons who were still coaching because of bowl teams. They declined to be canidates for the job that's why they were not formally contacted. At any rate who the h**l cares at this point. It won't produce any wins. The problem has and is the fact that the playing field is still not completely level. Until it is the Good Lord himself could not produce a winner over night.
For all of you who are beating on the administration, I hope you are putting your money were your mouth is and writing big ($1000) checks to the Mustang Club rather than being a DickerJames.

Since I like his name, I'll play his game. SMU probably will finish 1-10 this year. The offense might be excused for lack of a good QB. The defense had too many injuries. Allowing for these player problems, the record is still too poor for the coach to keep his job. That's just the nature of his profession. Baylor went through a series of terrible losing seasons after joining the Big 12. But they kept changing coaches until they finally wised up and hired a good SEC coach to come save them. And it is beginng to work. SMU will be forced to do the same if we are to survive. Better a fresh start in a new conference than continue our losing ways. It will only take two weeks to see if the other Sam is right. Wait and see, that's all you have to do. You can try to silence a critic, but that doesn't change the truth. The countdown has begun.

Congratulations to the team on yesterday's win! A "W" is a "W", no matter what. Our guys found a way to dig down deep and pull it off despite the fact that things weren't going their way AND despite the bonehead decision to go for 2 that almost handed them a loss.
While I personally don't think Bennett is the guy to right this ship (a decision that was formalized after the 3 most recent losses), I do suspect Bennett will keep his job after this win.
Hopefully, you guys who keep touting him and keep sticking to the "YOUTH EXCUSE" will be right, and next year (Bennett's 4th year) his recruits will magically have matured to the point where we might at least have a winning season. OK, I'll even take 4 or 5 wins.
As far as game day coaching, Bennett oughta go see if Fondren Library has any books on "football science" and check them out permanently.
Other opinions on Bennett's future with SMU after this win?

If you want to get technical..... Your sentance should read: "And you should learn to write correctly, the "T" in "this" should have a ......." Otherwise your sentance doesn't make sense.
Just be thankful that most people on this board don't type in all caps. There are no grammar mistakes in the world more annoying than people who can't reach over and turn off caps lock.
