Questions with Calvin & The Ticket: Bums

Postby Lamont_Cranston » Mon Nov 08, 2004 12:37 am

I don't know about the rest of you...but I boo'ed and yelled for Calvin Watkins' butt to get off of the field Saturday during his "Questions with Calvin" b.s. segment. Frankly, I think SMU shouldn't let the bum or anyone else from the DMN in Ford Stadium next Saturday for the Nevada game after the articles that were written last week. Let 'em just 'call it in' since that's usually how they've covered us in the past.

And before the game, I walked by The Ticket's truck/van on the Boulevard and told 'em I thought they were a bunch of pre-adolescent idiots and I thought they should 'go home' and leave us alone.

I want the DMN and The Ticket to come begging to SMU to cover our program next year when we're kickin' some [deleted] in the C-USA!

You and Sir Trolls are out of the same mold--both of you ought to stop listening and reading since ya'll think the DMN and the Ticket are the cause of the poor football program at SMU. That'll teach them.

I don't know about anyone else but I couldn't hear a d*mn thing Calvin was saying. He held a microphone & motioned like he was talking for a couple of minutes, then raised both arms afterward. Most everyone around me was indifferent.

Just another segment in the long list of [deleted] poor in game entertainment at Ford Stadium. You can never hear the segments with Calvin being the worst. The insanely stupid chicken wing race(can't we have a pony race or something), horrible score updates(do I always have to whip out my cell phone to check other scores), the recent idea to have some kid doing PA and you have a less professional game presentation than half the high schools around town.

As for the ticket, they do nothing more than poke fun at a bad football team. Rhyner is strictly in it for the schtick aspect of it and the Hambonita is a major TCU homer. Most of my non-SMU friends are less accomodating and I can only shoot back with "but our men's soccer team is pretty damn good." How do we make the heckling stop? Just win baby and I can promise you that the bandwagon will start rolling.

Again with the DMN and Ticket bashing. Calvin busts his [deleted] on the SMU beat. It isn't exactly a plum beat right now. He makes the most of it. He got a nice story on the front page of the sports section on Sunday for the win and another story inside. I don't know what more you want from him or the DMN. A few weeks ago, people were dumb and complained that there was no coverage; now you complain about it being too negative. There will be more positive coverage as soon as there is somethign positive to write about. Until then, cancel your subscription and STFU.

The Ticket actually had a nice little SMU discussion before they rolled into Cowboy pregame coverage. Pretty positive. Again, if they talked more about SMU, you'd complain about them being too negative. They are one one of the most successful sports radio stations in the country, so calling the poor promotions guy making $5.25/hour an idiot will probably have little effect.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Well said, Brian. The chicken wing races don't bother me much - that restaurant pays for those, so of course they're going to have those stupid wings. And yes, Calvin's voice is as high as that of a small child. At least the kid announcer is done for the year - that was part of "Kids' Day at Gerald J." .... and while I think it's kind of cool to get kids involved at any level, if it helps them become PonyFans, the PA booth is one area that should have been off-limits.

And you're selling the soccer team short - I'm coming up in a couple of weeks to see them kick tail in the NCAA Tournament!

I am sick of the constant negative attacks Calvin has on Bennett, and SMU. If you read the original article he wrote about the Tulsa game, you would have thought we lost. Listen to the the press conferences, he tries to antagonize Bennett almost every time. I will be glad when that trash is gone!

Having to work frequently with the local media being part of the team who runs this site, I've gotten to know Calvin a little bit. He's a good guy, and like someone said, the SMU beat hasn't exactly been a plum assignment in recent years.

That being said, I think his article last week showed some poor judgment on his part.

The Athletics Department has gone over the top to pimp Calvin and The Dallas Morning News because they are a big sponsor. But we need to be more careful before jumping into bed with TDMN, because when it comes right down to it, they're just trying to sell newspapers.

The Athletics Department and the coaches have been very open and honest with Calvin in the past. I can't help but think that they'll be more guarded in the future, which is unfortunate for us readers. That's just what we fans need, more superficial reporting on our Mustangs.
"It’s hard to overstate how impressive SMU has been on the recruiting trail since the ACC announced the Mustangs would be joining the league”

Dooby,

Last week on this site I praised the coverage. As you may know, I am no fan of the DMN or the Ticket. However, Calvin's article last week was the best coverage this program has gotten since the Bennett hire. The comments of Dickerson and James told the alums to demand more winning & academic concessions from the administration. Contrary to what WEBMASTER may tell you, Bennett will gleefully talk to the DMN. He has no other choice. Lord knows that the Park Cities People will not cover the games.
