SMU ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME - NOMINEES?

Postby Lamont_Cranston » Mon Nov 08, 2004 10:36 pm

Continuing with an idea posted in another thread...if you were to nominate four individuals to be honored next year at Homecoming for an SMU Athletic Hall of Fame, who would they be?

Our potential fans and future students need to know more about the legends who have passed thru these halls over the years. Let's face it: Heritage Hall just doesn't cut the mustard when it comes to chronicling the greats who have played at so many sports at SMU!!! Our athletes need to be recognized publicly for their athletic greatness and their contributions to SMU legend & lore.

Remember...ALL sports categories (men & women) at SMU are eligible. And the recipient does not necessarily have to be living to be placed in the Athletic Hall of Fame. And the sport does not necessarily have to be 'on the books' anymore, either (i.e. men's track, baseball).

Here's my list to start the discussion:

Doak Walker - football, SMU's only Heisman Trophy recipient...so far!
Payne Stewart - golf
Jerry Heidenrich - Olympic swimmer
Jim Krebs - basketball

Cyndi Potter- Diving
Raymond Berry, Kyle Rote, Eric Dickerson, Craig James, Mike Livingston, Jerry LeVias, Louie Kelcher, Oscar Roan, Michael Carter, Arthur Whittington - Football
Lars Froehlander, Ricardo Prado, Martina Morascova - Swimming
Michael Carter, Janus Robberts, Libor Chartfeig, Gene and Joe Pouncy - Men's Track

I'm know there are a couple of tennis players, but I am drawing a blank on their names right this moment.

I think Lamar Hunt would be a good candidate, not for what he did as an athlete, but for what he has done for sports all around this country. He's not in the Pro Football HOF as a player!

C'mon, folks! Surely the rest of you have opinions on this subject. Where are Stallion, Bergermeister, Johnny Rock, Mustang Sally, etc. with their choices?

I like those, especially the entry of Heidenreich, an old HHS grad.

How about the banners in ford stadium?

Postby Sam I Am » Wed Nov 10, 2004 11:20 pm

All of the players who have banners hanging in the corridors of Ford stadium have a head start on being in th SMU Hall of Fame since it looks like they have already been recognized as football greats.

This is sad. One of the most successful sports at SMU doesn't have a soul mentioned...soccer. And I can’t name a single soccer player. Anyone? Also, where is the women’s rowing team nominee? It would also be important to name the athletes who, regardless of their athletic achievements, have the highest GPA. We are after all, very proud of our graduation rates (more so than our success rate). We could name one scholar a year to the H of F as the Pye Award inductee.
