BOYCOTT: Show Dickerson and James we mean business!!!It's rediculous that former SMU football players, members of the "Pony Express," are adding to the media pile-on of our great university! First the DMN, then the Ticket, now our own family of athletic alumni!
Reading the thread about the SMU hat on Ebay got me thinking. Let's show Dickerson and James that we don't like it when they go out of the way to bash the football players that followed in their footsteps! I am never going to buy another piece of Pony Express memorabelia. I'm going to find a way to properly dispose of what I have. Returning SMU to greatness takes a village, my friends! I for one am willing to do my part. Are you? Don't hate me for being sooo happy!!
Just bear in mind that the university treated them and that entire team as "leppers" for years. Pye was not only anti-football, but tried to blank out our heritage. It was only last year the team was even recognized again and invited back. Many of the alumns never have been.
I would pay for shipping if anyone wants to discard anything. My son would love it. Hell, so would I!
Go SMU, beat that Immoral Team Born Of Ladies of the Night
People are overreacting to the Dickerson comments. If he were a regular person saying those things, there would be no uproar. He said nothing that wasn't 100% correct. The only fault is that he does not help out the program. What percentage of ex-players do? If anything we should be thanking him - the more negitive press the program receives, the faster we get to a resolution - a program run with the purpose to win, or the drop to I-AA and obscurity.
Couldn't disagree more. The fact is that Dickerson is NOT just an average person. He's a man who was given a chance to receive a free education at a first-rate university and who was treated like a rock star because of his athletic ability. He had all the benefits all of us would love to have had if we could run like he does. There are lots of former athletes who support the program, and there are lots who don't -- that's their choice. But for someone who not only doesn't help the program but doesn't even visit to see the state of the program to sit in California and whine about something he's never tried to improve is shameless.
I didn't have a problem with the story being written, because I agree with many of the things that were said. What I do have a problem with is someone who's glad to go to NFL training camp .... er, college .... for free and then doesn't appreciate it. Had he blown out a knee and never gained a single yard in the NFL, would he have appreciated his time at SMU? I don't know.
I don’t buy that ‘we gave you a free education so you owe us something back’ line for a second. It ignores the bigger picture, that college athletics is a multi-billion dollar industry with the colleges raking in all the money and the athletes getting very little. I would argue that SMU gained much more financially from ED’s 4 years here than Eric did. Look at basketball; Viacom secured an 11-year $6 billion deal just to air March Madness.
ED was asked his opinion of our athletic program. He GAVE it. You may not like the answer but the truth is we STINK. We absolutely, unequivocally, pathetically STINK. That is not an opinion, it is fact. 120 Division 1-A schools post DP, we rank 117th. And Couch’em is dead-on…..it is time for our administration to poop or get off the toilet.
Dickerjames give SMU recognitionHaving Dickerjames in the media keeps SMU alive in the public view. We should remember the dictum that it doesn't matter what they say about us as long as they spell out name right. Don't disavow them. Claim them as our last vestige of naional prominence. Besides, their criticisms were correct if even unpopular.

No U STINK...OPINIONS ARE LIKE AS$H$L$S-everybody has one! If Dickerson had been any good he would have been at USC/OU/GA, etc... BUT!!! "ED" wasn't-- HOWEVER A load of tough-ass linemen ignored that & carried him & SMU to the top! "ED" doesn't get 'it' AND neither do you, SoCal... But ABC Mon Nite FB did- & that's why he sits in S Cal (like others, right SoCal)? Bottom line- "ED", did U report all those SMU Pony $$$ to the IRS??? Didn't think so, ED.... "ED" & Clarett- same cut of cloth!!!
Now that is a little harsh SWC2010. Dickerson was damn good and didn't come to SMU because no one else wanted him...we just had the winning bid. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not proud of that...it is just a fact of that time. That was the MO of college ball at that point in time...or at least in the SWC. Now, he may not be the most eloquent speaker in the world, but that has nothing to do with his football talent. Personally, I wish he would have choosen to be more involved with our program over the years, but he chose not to and that is his perrogative. Luckily we have other lettermen that are still involved that are just as important in the scheme of things as ED. So let it go and enjoy your life.
BTW, Saturday night after our win over Tulsa, I went home and the ABC College football game was just finishing up. The post game show had James on it and at one point he commented that he was going to have to be a homeboy..."His Ponies had won today". So he hasn't totally disassociated himself from his alma mater.
Boycott the truth?Dickerson, James and the other former football players -- not all were at SMU during the Pony Express era -- were asked their opinion of the current program and they gave it with varying degrees of candor.
What did the people so upset by their remarks want them to say? That Copeland and Bennett have the Mustangs on the right track? That five wins in three seasons is just fine and dandy and an encouraging sign of better days to come? Did you want them to lie? If I had an extra hundred grand laying around the house, which I don't, I wouldn't have any problem resisting the urge to making a six-figure donation to the SMU football program. If I had a son in high school with the talent to play Division I-A football, I could not in good conscience advise him play for Bennett. So boycott me, too. I can live with it.
NO THESE GUYS DON'T STINK

HEY Q.M.D first of all you got it all wrong, I WOULDN'T CARE WHO COACHED SMU. Football is not everything I SENT MY BOY TO QUOTE UN QUOTE TO SMU FOR AN EDUCATION AND IF YOUR SON HAD A CHANCE TO GO HERE YOU AND YOUR SON WOULD BE FOOLISH AND BLIND TO THINK NOT TO GO HERE. FOOTBALL IS NOT (NFL) A SURE THING ,BUT THAT TOP NOTCH EDUCATION WILL COUNT IF YOU USE IT RIGHT. HE SHOULD NOT BE PLAYING FOR Bennett in the first place. He should play the game cause he loves it and Bennett is not a bad man he is trying to get these kids to the next level. I feel your frustration but your priorities are way off. Calm down and come out Sat. and YELL LIKE YELL FOR THE MUSTANGS

Re: Boycott the truth?
Agreed. I complain about the LACK of serious media coverage. I found Calvin's story to be the best thing written about SMU football since the Bennett hire. We must not fault reporters for writing good stories. Others on this board believe that the Dallas media should be a big SMU cheerleader and only write stories about the greatness of Phil. While PK, Lamont Cranston, BUS, and Ponyfan would all love those stories, everyone else in the Metroplex would find that news source crazy. After all, other fans do not have such low expectations for their college teams. Fans of UT have called for Mack Brown's head even though they consistently finish in the top 10. I wonder if in anyone in Stillwater complains that Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas have ruined OSU's tradition because they do not meet recruits at the airport or go to the games.
