I actually don't have a thing for Price. I have a thing for good coaching. I agree that SMU would have never hired Price given his reputation. I actually have never really been impressed with Price until this year. He was a .500 coach at WSU and that school showed a lot of patience with him, then he has 2 good seasons and bolts. I do feel that the present state of our football program is a combination of the restrictions we have in place and less than stellar coaching. I think there are big name coaches out there who SMU could nab. Hell, Bobby Ross is coaching at Army. Is there a harder place in the nation to recuit than Army, especially now? [deleted] Tomey is an assistant at UT and desperately wants to be a head coach again.
Re:
Bill McCartney.
The team at UTEP is largely intact this year compared to last year, plus or minus one or two. Those guys had virtually no disclipline last year. They would kick footballs up into the Sun Bowl stands during practices and the coaches didn't do anything about it. Those days are certainly over with Mike Price. His method of disciplining and stirring up motivation in these guys has definitely produced results and earned some headlines.
Now, whatever recruiting model you may be using (Pye, JC transfers, etc. etc.) I would think it makes a difference in influencing valued recruits when the team upsets Hawaii in front of a full stadium with said recruits in attendance, and proceeds to log a winning season record (careful boys & girls, they're not 9-2 yet!). Mike Price the coach has had a lot to do with it. Yeah, even in a lil' ol' town like El Paso.
Yeah, this is true, but so did Forrest Gregg and I don't think McCartney would have been any more successful. Besides, he stated that he considered the job because God told him to. Maybe God did tell him to but that doesn't mean that McCartney had any real understanding at the time of what he would have gotten into. Or perhaps he did and that contract he had already signed with CU was a VERY convienent excuse. So we got one coach who took the job out of loyalty and another because of possible insanity (Albeit a great coach). Anyone who took it because they thought they could win some football games?
Re:
