DMN article about Bennett

Postby RGV Pony » Sat Nov 13, 2004 7:47 am

Saturday's DMN has a good article about Coach Bennett, highlighting some good and bad. The good is that he's evolving, and doing so to the team's benefit. The bad is that he's doing so "on the job," so to speak.

For the most part, the article talks about until recently it's been difficult for Bennett to delegate responsibilities, and as a result certain areas had suffered. I see this as ironic coming from the guy who's forgotten more football than the rest of us have known. Those of us who run successful million-dollar a year businesses know that a sign of a poor manager is one who rather than identifying strengths and delegating instead micromanages everything themselves and then complains or laments how nothing gets done right (cf. the if they're not prepared blame the coaches comments).

At any rate, let's just hope Coach B continues to learn valuable lessons and it works to our benefit. Nice picture of Coach in the article too...a la Rumplestiltskin.

I liked the article -- it was a clear indication of Coach Bennett's maturation as a coach. I remember reading an article about Tommy Bowden having the same struggle when he became a head coach. It's something that I get the impression a LOT of coaches go through when they first take over the big whistle.

i'm in town for the game and read the article this morning. i, too, think it's an overall good indication of the coach: willing to acknowledge that things he's been doing aren't working and willing to change his methods.

Absolutely - as a head coach, Coach Bennett is basically a redshirt sophomore. The learning process continues for him as well as for the players. Both will continue to get better and better.
