Re: 8-4 should land us in a better bowl than last year
First and foremost for me is to go to a Bowl,. I would prefer one I can attend but will be overjoyed with any. I love watching SMU play post season whether in person or on TV.

The Hawaii Bowl is not the right choice for the fans or for the future of the program. I want to see the game in person as do many others. Christmas Eve in Hawaii is not feasible for the vast majority of the fans or players families.

lets be honest, we'll maybe bring 3000 to a drivable bowl. maybe 8-10k in dallas. no students will be there b/c they're home on break. and our 'marginal' alumni (the ones who stay on the blvd drinking beer to watch some other team on TV) will stay home b/c of a better game on in their opinion.
Hawaii bowl got us a LOT of attention for our program nationally b/c it was the ONLY game on that evening. the advertising impressions of the SMU brand approached 25million if i recall correctly.
does it suck that it's christmas eve - yes (but see my point above). does it suck that it's expensive to get to for fans - yes. but it's important to continue to grow the SMU brand on a national scale.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Point Taken, but I still would like a game that I could get to by car in a reasonable amount of time.

Don't have numbers on viewers for the Ticket City bowl, but Hawaii Bowl beats out all other possible bowls in number of viewers, and the added hype of June facing his old team should increase ratings. Yes most people can't afford to actually go, but that is a small amount of fans compared to the people that will watch SMU, many for the first time.
Hawaii needs TWO more wins to be bowl eligible. Hawaii plays 13 games, so it needs 7 wins at a minimum to be bowl eligible. At Nevada (double digit underdog according to Vegas), home against Fresno State (I think Hawaii should be favored), home against Tulane (Tulane ends its season with a loss in Hawaii, hope they have a nice trip), and home against BYU (tough game).
After the losses to Utah State, San Jose State, and UNLV, I'm not taking anything for granted with Hawaii. I think that Tulane and Fresno State will be wins...but nothing is guaranteed. Hawaii fans have already started not showing up for games, pushing to get McMackin fired, and many have given up on Hawaii making it to the Hawaii Bowl.
I think that JJ wants one final Hawaii Bowl against Hawaii to close that chapter before SMU goes to the Big East. The thing is, if SMU is still in CUSA in 2012 then SMU could go to a different bowl this year and go to the Hawaii Bowl next year.

If Hawaii doesn't make it, then Ticket City might give us more media exposure and a chance for fans to actually go. If Hawaii does make, the millions of people watching are well worth the inability for most to go. Next year should be the Liberty Bowl and final year in CUSA.

Re: 8-4 should land us in a better bowl than last year
A couple days ago SI had predicted we would be playing in the Armed Forces Bowl.
And yes, Hawaii is inconvenient for most of us fans, but after all I went through as an undergrad I'm happy to be going bowling period!

Hawaii bowl makes since for national exposure. Ticket City makes since for local exposure. I'm not sure which is the overall better option, but for purely personal reasons I would like the ticket City bowl.
