I'm thinking the same things being said about Penn St right now were the same things being said about Baylor's basketball program after the Dave Bliss scandal.
You had one teammate murder another teammate, and Coach Bliss wanted to lay all of the blame on the murdered teammate, by saying he was a drug dealer.

although, the baylor/bliss scandal was a single incident. as horrendous as it was, it pales somewhat in the face of the pervasive, recurrent, decade(s)-long events at penn state, don't you think?

I'm not sure that the NCAA can do anything sanction-wise, can they? As sick and despicable as the acts committed were, they did not involve recruits and/or illegal benefits.

These are criminal charges and will be dealt with as such.

If I'm wrong, let me know. I just don't see the Death Penalty happening in this situation

It happened in the AD office, it was hidden way up amongst the chain of command, admin knew, possible govt. officials.

Sandusky had an office in the AD, and was running his charity from it, now they are saying the charity was prostituting boys to wealthy donors.

We have no idea how far this runs, and someone better put a bulletproof suicide proof barrier around sandusky...

Talk about lack of institutional control...not to mention this involved football camps at PSU...

The NCAA will do nothing, but the program needs to be shut down, everyone involved needs to be cleared out and they need to start all over again.

latest rumors suggest a slush fund for players through Sandusky's organization

from everything i've read and ever heard, the death penalty is for repeat violators. i don't understand how one strike, no matter how egregious, can result in the application of the repeat violators provision.

I'll bet they can come up with something close. See Baylor basketball.

also, with Morehouse it was their first violation. Ditto MacMurray-first violation. USL was prior to the repeat violator rule.

I fail to see how multiple instances over a 20 year period, followed by a coverup by tens, if not hundreds, of people constitutes a "single occurrence."

RGV, I stand corrected.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_penalty_(NCAA)

The difference I see is that I just can't say for certain that the NCAA has jurisdiction here. I'm sure that for every attorney that tells you they do, another will tell you they don't.

My gut feeling is that they do and will demonstrate so in the very near term. I find it hard to think they wouldn't given Sandusky's role at the university and the fact that the Athletic Dept. is at the forefront of this tragedy.

Again, you were right, and I was wrong.

isn't there a limit on the lookback period for the repeat offenders provision of 7 or 8 years? i heard that throw around a lot during the Miami scandal a few months ago.

[quote="Dutch"]penn state should administer self suspension of the program. shut it down for a year.[/quote

Dutch,
With 100,000+ in the stands every Saturday when PSU has a home game, sadly that will never happen.

As I understand the NCAA by-laws, and my knowledge is limited, this action did not involve student athletes and therefore would not be covered, under article 19 or otherwise. This is a matter for the police and courts, not the NCAA. NCAA death penalty is not on the table, I don't believe.

But here they are if somebody wants to demonstrate otherwise.
