Is it clear to anybody else but me that other teams have figured out how to stop the June Jones run and shoot? Rush three and drop eight every time. We don't have a clue what to do with that. The last several teams have done that (see USM, Tulsa and Navy, and probably Tulane if they had any talent at all. I think Zach Line is a great back but if we had somebody there with some real speed and the ability to make people miss, they would run for 200 yards per game.
Also, the fact that we never hit much in practice shows up in these games. Scared to go over the middle at all.
June is so frigging hard headed, he thinks his offense is just going to work. Maybe not.

It would be nice to have a breakaway back for sure. Nothing against Zach.

Re: Run and Shoot
I think we are fine with Zach Line. Line is good enough to keep the defense honest on most plays. What we are missing is a semi-mobile QB. We don't need a Vince Young or Robert Griffin, but we need someone who can sprint for a first down when the defense drops eight. The minute your QB sprints for a first down and slides feet first for the first down, you have something.......it's called "Multi-dimensional when necessary". Once your QB shows he is mobile, the defense has to drop someone shallow to shadow the backfield. I love McDermott, I think he is a good guy and anyone who beats TCU is a friend in my book. The only problem is that McDermott is a statue in the pocket.

Re: Run and Shoot
Would we even be having this discussion if we had a semi-agile qb who can factor in strong wind in to his pass execution?
And let's not even consider the whining about Zack.

it would seem that if the O-line would be able to block 3 rushers, the qb would be able to easily sit back and allow the receivers to get open and find them. the fact that 3 D-linemen could consistently pressure the qb seems to be more of an issue than the qb or the offensive system.

Any other QB would be able to feel and sidestep pressure or take off. The o-line isn't great but and their deficiencies are magnified with a statue in the pocket. Besides McD has thrown plenty of bad passes with no pressure on him. He's the offense's biggest problem.

Re: Run and Shoot
There's a pretty good team running an offense that looks a lot like this one they have small wide recievers, small running backs and a statue quarterback named Tom Brady. Seems to work pretty good for Bill Belichek. BUT they do have TE's on staff no fullbacks I don't think. I was gonna post about this. I mean they throttled the Jets last night even though, to me, a mere football fan and former High school lineman that it looks like the pats are running a Saturday offense on Sunday. The pats are like stepping in a time machine and going back to the 80's offensively to me. Their defense is trash though I don't think the O would be their undoing.
Not exactly about SMU's offense, but to me it looks relevant.
My Lions won one playoff game in the NFL in the run and shoot (with Barry Sanders), even the Oilers and I mean they had some great teams couldn't win playoff football games playing like this. Geez I don't know what to say. The region you guys are in is really, really pass happy. Must be all that darn nice weather.

Yes, quick underneath routes to the TE's is how you combat that. Then, if they bring coverage back down to the middle to stop that, something should open back up on the deep routes.
