Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU becauseYea, except he left to move up a chair, for more money.
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU becauseReggie is very happy with the move he made, his only worry is that this may be Jim Christians last year in frogtown, unless they make major progress
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU because
That's true but he could have been on a BE staff. ProfX - I don't know that Doherty is truly that much safer, what do you know about that? Is he still supported by the money guys?
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU becauseIf we don't show improvement from last year (i.e., CBI at a minimum) I think he's gone. My opinion only (and I'm certainly not an insider), but I think with our move to the BE we will have a pretty good shot at a big name coach.
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU becauseWhy would the joke be on him?
I always root for TCU to fail and lose at everything, because it's TCU, but Coach Brown is a good guy. I hope he enjoys great success ... after he moves on from Froggy High, of course.
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU because
The money guys love him, he can literally do no wrong. It's possible he could survive this year, even if its a major debacle. The talk is already started, the incoming recruits are great, and Doh deserves a year in the Big East, etc., etc., blah blah blah. He just got a contract extension, only a disaster will dislodge him, and maybe not even then.
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU because
That's what I think as well, and keep hearing. Its also part of the reason I find shorestang's take on ponypride so off base, considering he's the pulse of realignment. Certain ly none of those guys are going to hang Doh w/o the services of what could be 3 starters in Smith/Williams & Russell Also, I'm friendly w/Reggie and he's a rock solid guy, devout in his faith. He literally prays on every decision, and won't second-guess any decision he makes, cause its all God's will for him. He once explained to me that he's the only coach he can think of that's coached/played at every Metroplex school. Thinks of that as a blessing etc. FWIW, he didnt find the Big East a particularly easy to sell in Texas
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU becauseThanks Prof X.
Hoopmanx - Reggie's a great guy, tremendous ambassador for any program, but you don't leave one school for its rival even if it is to move up a chair. Yeah, yeah, he's a Metroplex guy and all, but it just doesn't send the right message. And we all know that the Big East is an easy sell in Texas for its prestige; what made it a difficult sell previously was that there weren't any Big East teams anywhere near Texas.
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU because
I don't know how many coaches you know, Calallen, but its an industry. Unless they are alums, it's far easier to look at coaches as assassins. They don't care about individual institutions, they care about stepping stones, depending on their career goals/arc etc. Bottom line is that Reggie was at SMU, was responsible for a great '11 class, and was passed over for a pay raise and bump in chair, when Doh brought on hobbie. In essence, we're going to pay you the worst on the staff, have you sit in the 3rd chair, and you're going to do all the traveling, as well as talent acquisition. Professionally speaking, he wasn't treated as well as he should have been at SMU. Even heard that the staff bonus for the CIT/20 wins didn't really trickle down, if you catch my drift. Reggie feels blessed to have been at SMU, and is thankful for the experience, but a pay raise and chair bump is everything. The only place TCU/SMU matters in that process, is w/regards to the fans.
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU becauseI certainly hope that any extension that was given to doh has a lot of outs and performance clauses because he absolutely screwed SMU on his first contract. I also hope that there is a 'circle of clowns' paying his salary as it would be a travesty for the university to be doing so.
GO PONIES!!!
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU because
I have no prob w/Doh hate, but 'circle of clowns'? Really?
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU becausenoticed that Stanford's HC is an endowed position. Dawkins is the "Mr and Mrs so and so head basketball teaching" position.
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU becauseIts not like TCU basketball is going to the sunbelt. Having UT, Kansas, OU, OSU, TECH, and Baylor coming into Moody would be pretty sweet. You'd sell out just about all those games.
Re: Remember when Reggie Brown left SMU to coach TCU because
I'm well aware of all you said, but you and I both know that Reggie wants to be a head coach someday (preferably in the Metroplex). You and I both also know that the guys that do the hiring (ADs - but really big money guys) aren't really basketball industry guys. Some of them are on the fringes of it (Holland at ECU comes to mind) but none of the Metroplex ADs are in the basketball industry and certainly none of the big money donors at any of the Metroplex schools are industry guys. You don't get the big job by burning your bridges with the big money donor. I heard the same about the staff bonus not really trickling down. Shame, but not shocking.
