Why aren't We Recruiting this Kid?

Postby Stallion » Sun Nov 21, 2004 1:11 pm

in a down year for recruiting QBs in Texas we seem to be going after some pretty marginal QB prospects. Think we ought to at least check out this sleeper Blake Szymanski (6-4, 195 with a self reported 4.55) from Wichita Falls Rider. He is the quarterback getting the ball to Notre Dame commit David Nelson. He has thrown for over 3,000 yards and 30 TDs passing with 9 TDs rushing. Sounds like he does have at least decent foot speed as he has over 400 yards rushing as well. In the first round of the playoffs he was 24 for 39 with 6TDs passing (which is the same number McClown has during his entire NFL season :D) and added another 2 TDs running. He is just now getting some looks from colleges but LSU thought enough of him to have an assistant fly in to check out his passing. Also receiving interest from Baylor, Tulsa and Central Michigan. Noticed they won big again this weekend.

If all those numbers are accurate, I agree that we should be checking him out. At least based on raw data, he sounds more impressive than the Willis kid at Denton Ryan.

Kid is having some great playoff games after a good season. Plays on the D also and seems a lot tougher than he looks. Been trying to get the TCU coaches to take a hard look at him and don't know if they will.

Another kid very interested in SMU is Clint Bricker (6-0, 196, 4.55) from Austin Westwood.

Might be interesting to see what kind of numbers "the Willis kid" would have if he had a 6'5"/6'6" WR who could run like Nelson. I might even be able to complete a pass with Nelson out there (well, maybe).

Willis plays in one the Top 10 programs in the state. The knock on Willis is that he is not very tall and doesn't seem to have a strong arm. Also, Rivals has a slow 40 time of 4.87 on Willis which might be suspect because he appears to be a damn good scrambler. But hey I'm generally going against the grain on Willis as he is now rated a 3 star 5.5 on Rivals.

Didn't we also recruit another QB out of Wichita Falls Rider a few years ago? He didn't turn out so bad.

I think Mr. Flanigan is from Old High - Wichita Falls H.S. - not Rider.

His stats (and size are impressive).

He also is an All-State baseball player.

Noticed he also got invited to some Emfinnger post-season "All-Star" game in Louisiana.

Of course, every week Rider advances makes it harder for us to get his attention.

Really? I could swear Ramon played at WF Rider. And he was a hell of a HS baseball player, too.

From what I hear, his stats are good mainly due to his receivers.

Couldn't that be said of most QB's? If you don't have recievers that can get open and catch too, no QB's going to look good.

He played at Rider. Here's the link to an article announcing his then move to be the QB coach at UNT that mentions WF Rider.

http://texasfootball.com/00coll_0706.html

"Flanigan, beginning his second year on staff, coached wide receivers last season. He is a former standout quarterback at SMU where he graduated as the school's all-time leader in total offense (7,427 yards) and fourth-leading passer (6,640 yards). Flanigan is a 1997 SMU graduate and a 1992 graduate of Rider High School in Wichita Falls."

are you trying to say that willie and that reciever he had...what's his name?... were the only reason for winning? i think not, the gunslinger put together that two tons of fun in the offensive line if you will remember.
