I did not realize there was that much demand for goat herders.

smuaggie wrote:Here we go….just listen to the jealousy! By the way gostang…the Aggies are successful b/c we don’t spend our time despising anyone, we simply enjoy traditions and rivalries. Maybe SMU could learn something here, or at least some of the fans could. When I graduated and was able to walk into jobs b/c of the ring on my finger, and no not the one of my left hand (which I am just as proud of) I wasn’t wishing I had gone anywhere else but TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY!
Hmmm...I harbor no 'jealousies' of either school. My standards are much higher than to lower myself to the level of Teasips and Aggie$. Frankly, I *pray* every year that both schools' teams and fans just annihilate each other on Thanksgiving.

While traditions and rivalries are commendable, I don't recall a time when SMU's fans or reps of the school captured, killed or mutilated the competition's defenseless mascot in an act of pre-game shenanigans. I find it ironic that a school such as A$M that prides itself on its veterinarian program allowed such terrible things like that to happen more than once (Peruna & Bevo).

And let us not forget the overzealous Aggie who had delusions of being the defender of Kyle Field's 'sacred turf' when Peruna's handlers ran her across the field following a TD and he pulled his sabre and chased them in an effort to stab them! (Thanks for the photo, MustangStealth! You posted it while I was writing this.)

Just a couple of examples of why I am glad I am *not* an Aggie!

Get and early start on hating the Aggies

All I can say is that from the outside looking in you cannot begin to understand what Tradition really means to those of us who were fortunate enough to be a part of something that is known to so many. You can keep your comments coming all day about overzealous Aggies or “goat herders”, but know that I have grown to love and support SMU, b/c I of my husband, who himself is and was a Pony. I have A&M running in my blood and while my husband will die a Pony and I an Aggie, I would be proud if my children went to either school.

From the TAMU website:
What does it mean to be a Texas Aggie? Since its beginning in 1876, Texas A&M has developed a rich heritage of traditions that have helped to develop character, leadership, unity, and public service in all its graduates.
By experiencing these honored traditions you can begin to understand what is truly meant by "the Spirit of Aggieland."

You say tradition, I say cult activity. But I do have a brother who is an Aggie, so apparently predisposition to cults and goat herding runs in my family too.

Which traditions build that character. The firearms that were used to shoot a player on an opposing team and had to be taken away; Shaving Peruna's tail; Waving sabres at cheerleaders from SMU; Learning how to steal a horse (a capital offense in Texas); barbecuing and branding BEVO; attempting to steal the Baylor Bear causing extreme injury to the would be theives; keeping one's mascot on ice for the summer so that you can have a funeral for a dog in the fall; then nearly rioting that fall when the Rice band plays "oh where oh where has my little dog gone"; a bon fire that pollutes and environment and has led to fatalities; dressing your cheerleaders in white jump suits; and the inability of the marching band to spell the letter "T" when playing SMU.

That said, I like the Aggies. They were always fun to play, you never knew when they'd do something truly bizarre.

Did you hear the one about the Aggie who wanted a vasectomy?

While I have no love for either UT or A$M, this Friday I'll be a HUGE Aggie fan hoping that they can go into Austin and beat UT.

Why? I'd love to see Boise State make it into a BCS bowl. :D

MrMustang1965 wrote:from The Battalion, TA$M's student newspaper:

For one week during football season, "fish," or freshmen, in the Corps of Cadets walk around campus with bottle cap spurs attached to their shoes. These are known as "fish spurs," said Chris Johnson, a junior political science and history major.

The spurs are made of bottle caps usually collected at Northgate on the short alley known as "bottle cap alley," Johnson said. These spurs are removed before going in and out of buildings, but otherwise must be worn by the (freshmen) cadets at all times that they are in their uniform, Johnson said.

Johnson said the bottle caps are flattened and then attached to the shoe by being strung on a coat hanger that is bent around to make a stirrup that fits over the heel. Since the "fish" class color changes each year, so does the spur color; this year, the spurs were spray painted red. Johnson said that each fish has 54 bottle caps per spur, because with both shoes combined, that is 108 total, for the Class of 2008.

Johnson said the tradition of fish spurs began when the Aggies used to play the Southern Methodist University Mustangs.

"We were 'spurring' the Mustangs," Johnson said.

Now fish wear the spurs the week before the football game against Texas Tech because the Aggies no longer play SMU, Johnson said. If A&M is outscored by Tech, the fish wear their spurs the week after the game as well," he added. He hasn't looked at the upcoming schedule, has he? :P

Notice that the ARROGANT aggies never get beat, they are merely "outscored"

Nice try, but I have around 5 friends that could not get in to A&M that go to UT currently.

A&M will soon be a force in football AND basketball. They have great coaches leading both programs.

Hmmmm, aggies don't spend time despising anyone? Uh, have you checked the words of your fight song lately?

The comment about people not being able to get into A&M but going to UT is a joke. I have no love of UT, but ANY third party observer would tell you after looking at admissions information that UT is a higher caliber school -exception being engineering or vet schools.

All that aside, what we all cheer most for around here is a BCS trainwreck, so here's hoping you beat the orange menace.

gag em!!figgies, or whatever.
