Jared Williams

Post by 1983 Cotton Bowl »

I'm interested to hear thoughts on Jared Williams. Obviously, we saw a DRAMATIC dropoff in production at the RB position on Saturday. So if you just look at the numbers he didn't do well at all. But it seemed like everytime Jared touched the ball there were already three UH defenders in the backfield waiting for him. I kind of wondering if the O-line was giving him any help. Thoughts?

this isnt about Williams, but w/ regard to Wimbly, when JJ put him in, rattled off close to 5 yards per carry, with a couple completed passes mixed in we were in UH territory. Then JJ had JJ air it out and instead of 2nd and short or 3rd and manageable we were looking at 3rd and 10

I will say seeing Williams run, one gains appreciation for Zach's vision, seeing holes where no one else does etc.

Jared had a nice move on a screen to elude a tackler or tacklers on one of our trips inside UH's red zone in the first half.

Agree as they were waiting for him and maybe JJ doesn't have the express ability to call an audible when its pretty apparent that the play wasn't going to work as the line was stacked and was stacked on the same side he ran to, on at least two of the runs.

I wish Line could have played. But, UH was stunting like crazy. It seemed that most of the time Williams was hit in the backfield before he got to a hole (if there was one). I don't think Line would have had one of his better days with their rush. Remember, Williams was a freshman filling in for the 'star' and starting against a ranked team. He wasn't a glaring problem. Line would have been better for sure, but Williams didn't have much to work with.

For Wimbley, I read the box and I thought it said 7 carries for 19 net yards. That's not 5 yards per carry. Did I misread the stat?

had a couple for a first loss.

First 2 carries resulted in 3rd and 1.

Then JJ decided to throw, throw throw

4th carry loss of 2

Last few carries were end of the game.

work with me.

Yeah, I hear you. I actually never got past McD's fumble in watching the game. Turned it off in disgust. So I didn't watch many of Wimbley's carries. I know the box doesn't always tell the whole story.

they all run together after awhile.

JJ's fumble after the fake punt...momentum swings like that should lead to points
D Thompson in the end zone underthrown
D Thompson in the end zone overthrown
Missed FG
whatever happened to stall the drive after the Miracle on 4th Street redux return

there's your game..

Houston did what A&M started doing in the second half of that game - stop the run, force the QB to beat you.

The carries Wembley got 5 yards a pop on, he had to run over 3 guys to get there.

Jared Williams or Fogel. Which one would you choose when it's 3rd and 1', and you need to go for the money ($5).

I thought Williams did as well as possible under the circumstances. Problem is that he is not big enough yet to really block blitzing linebackers/linemen and does not always identfy what the defense may be doing. Obviously, Wimbley is big and strong enough to do the blocking, but he too is not sufficiently adept at identifying the defenses and what may be happening. I saw him go to the wrong place on a number of plays giving Houston straight shots on McD. In addition, when JJ puts in Wimbley it is somewhat telegraphing that it will be a pass play. JJ tried to give Wimbley a few initial carries to create some respect by the defense, but did not follow up with more carries. Williams will be fine particularly if they can get him into pass patterns and give him some space.

The line (Poon Squad seems appropriate) was getting their asses kicked, our draws were hit and miss with Line but he had the vision and power to break the hits for serious yardage, with our group of backups we have no hope in the running game and they suck at blocking too.

In the first few drives June was doing what every one always wants him to do. Use the run and try to run over the Defense-doesn't work in this offense. I guess he wanted to deemphasize McDermott. Williams would have done better if he was used solely for a change of pace like the Run and Shoot is designed. You simply can not run consistently in this offense unless you get the right defense/situation .
