QB vs. Rice?

You have to wonder what is going through the players' minds right now. If I am a defensive player or receiver on this team I am furious at the QB situation. It would be great to hear from June, "hey I've got this." Is he sacrificing this season (too bad Seniors) for next or the year after? Does he just not have the talent at QB. He seems to have at least some talent every where else. How can Kaiser be as bad as McD. What happened to this team? I would rather have a team that is fun to watch than what we have seen over the past few weeks. How can a J. Jones offense not put up points. This is not just an issue this year, we did not score last year and had a horrible finish to last season (in black jerseys no less). I get that players should lead, but didn't June lead the entire program back. I don't think the program is to the point where it can rely just on players to lead. I wonder if June will fire any coaches off his staff. Ok, too much for one post, but as an alum, season ticket holder and die hard this second half has been as bad as I can remember. No direction.

The consensus on this board was that after the UTEP game, there were going to be QB problems all season long. So what we're seeing shouldn't be a surprise. I'm sure several thought when McDermott got on that roll in the middle of the season, it was going to be different.

Well, when people get enough film of you and have quality material, they're usually going to have a pretty good way to stop you. So. Miss, Tulsa, Navy and Houston all had enough and better people to win those game. Navy was just a good decision to flood secondary.

So when the opposition learns about you, you have to make the counter adjustment. Has this coaching staff really done that?

The results suggest the staff has not.

Re the staff part of the question.

Short answer is we don't have sufficiently trained talent to win at consistently high levels. I still see this team trending upwards based upon team and fan expectations -- and what is at least as important, recruits.

We could have been perhaps a little more lucky the last few games, but we are right where any reasonable outside, objective observer would have said we should hope to be at this stage of the June Jones regime. Stuck in the top tiers of CUSA, heading to a better conference, getting some national pub.

All is good.

No, June has no talent at QB (no excuse for it, QBs are supposed to be his specialty) and it's the reason why this offense hasn't popped yet. This team ran into some legit opponents, frankly they were never that good to begin with and that TCU win got a bunch of people excited about an average team. June is tight with his staff, he's not firing anyone. Prospects for this program won't look any better until June gets us a QB.

What was June's stated goal this year? Did we come anywhere close to it?

Hint- No the goal wasn't to find a QB that could actually run his offense.

Win C-USA, go to Hawaii Bowl. The hope of the first happening died weeks ago and the second is on life support.

I believe JJ McDermott is an average CUSA QB. He's looked good, though workmanlike at times, and then pretty bad at other times.

Kyle Padron can be a truly great one. His struggles had more to do with an extended, but understandable sophomore slump -- extended because of his green-ness at the position, having played very little before coming to school here. But he has the size, the accuracy, leadership, and a nice bit of athleticism. I still think he'll come roaring back next year.

Kaiser, Preston I know nothing about. Preston is short.

Garret Gilbert ought to work out for us. Printz out to work out for us.

Bingo. The head coach set a reasonable objective in year four in his tenure, and came up short- badly.

So, a reasonable person is supposed to conclude all is well and merry when we fell well short of the objectives set by the individual running the program?

Did you happen to see the six yard slant route on third down to DJ that he overthrew by about 2 1/2 yards that bounced off of the DB's helmet standing four yards behind him? That is the simplest throw possible, and was an absolute abortion. How about the horrific under throw to Thompson in the endzone when he was stepping into it and skipped it off the turf.

Either something is really, truly wrong physically, or there's something really, truly wrong with that statement.

I guess I would believe an average CUSA QB could make those plays all the time...I mean CUSA sucks, but we're not the Sun Belt.

Exactly, we have beaten 1 decent team this year and got blown out by the best teams in C-USA. We have not made progress and next year could be worse.

I have no inside info, and it may sound like an excuse, but sure seems like injuries have dictated our play over the last few weeks. Padron is out, all indications are that kaiser did not live up to the hype, and Preston is too green at this stage. So we are stuck with JJMcD, who might be injured himself. With Line out, our offense has no identity.

I'd rather see the Wild Mustang to be honest. Let Beasley throw one.

Amen. I agree completely. The sad thing is that our defense is now good enough that if we had even a C+/B- level QB, we'd have made USM, Tulsa and Houston at least sweat and undoubtedly have beaten Navy. To keep all of those teams <14pts at half and still be down is a shame that I can only lay at the feet of the QB/offensive play-calling.

C-USA has 4 QBs worth a damn (Keenum, A.Davis, Kinne, D.Davis). McD certainly isn't much but he would have to be considered an average C-USA QB.
