Favorite College Game of the Year

Postby Water Pony » Mon Nov 29, 2004 12:10 pm

Army VS Navy

Ponyfans, if you love college football, tradition and spirit, this is the game of the year. I love the schools, players and their futures as leaders in our armed forces. I have yet to attend one of these games, but it is on my list of must-do events.

And what is your favorite game each year?

Auburn/Alabama - the atmosphere is like nothing I've ever seen.

(Of course, my favorite game THIS year was SMU/Nevada - the Ponies won convincingly, and acted as if they EXPECTED to. That, I hope, was a watershed game in the growth of the program.)

Any annual grudge match is good. Army/Navy. UT/A&M, Ga./Ga. Tech. Fla./FSU LSU/Ole Miss. Minn./Wisc. OSU/Mich. USC/UCLA. But the winner is Grambling/Southern.

That's the only non-SMU game where I watch halftime. Wouldn't miss it.

SMU-Rice and Harvard-Yale. Sure, the football sucks but man what outstanding graduation rates!

ponyte:

I like your example. Therefore, the following teams deserve a special place in the Valhalla of college FB:

Stanford VS the Pac 10
Duke VS the ACC
Northwestern VS the Big Ten
Vanderbilt VS the SEC
Air Force/Navy/Army VS everyone else
Rice VS CUSA

and SMU VS every opponent

Laugh if you want but if you want to see some downright, hard-hitting, no-holds-barred, all out war, college football...don't miss ANY Sam Houston State v. Stephen F. Austin game (Southland Conference, Div. 1-AA)!!! Bad blood between both schools and it's always a nail-biter! Trust me on this one.

I love the Colorado-Nebraska game. I also like ND and USC, but that game was terrible this year. I still think the best rivalry on the planet other than SMU-TCU (we may be small, but if you want bad blood you've got it...I absolutely cannot stand the horn frogs), is ATM/UT. The lone star shootout is the biggest and the best. It's been going on since before 1900. Texas-OU deserves a mention, but how much bad blood could be made when they've been rivals for under 20 years.

Army vs. Navy --- tradition, emotion and pagentry. I have attended about five of these games.

The USNA and USMA players (and Cadet & Midshipmen spectators) give 100% effort every second of the game.

Who are you...Rip Van Winkle???? Under 20 years? Texas/OU rivalry has undoubtably been going on since waaaaay before you were born. You can't be serious.

I believe that 2005 will be the 100th time the Teasips and the Sooners have played.

can't say I've got a favorite but have lived and witnessed Texas/OU, Okla St/OU, Duke/Carolina and Clemson/USC. All these rivalry games have great intensity but I have to admit Clemson/Carolina is as fierce as I've seen...these people have a serious sickness about their rivalry and it extends far beyond football to EVERYTHING they do. They actually keep a "scorecard" leading up to the football game and count every head to head competition.

I want to see the day return that both SMU & TCU have strong programs and our annual games become a bigger deal. Can it/will it happen???

Army/Navy is best

Postby Sam I Am » Wed Dec 01, 2004 11:59 pm

It's the rivalry that matters between Army & Navy, certainly not the caliber of play on the field. When the game is played in Philly, it has all of the drama of an equally divided Cotton Bowl for the UT/OU game. The players dedication is inspiring, knowing that the seniors may well be in Iraq or Afganistan very soon. When I was serving in Viet Nam, rooting for Army was a big morale booster, especially if they won. I'll always be green. Go cadets!
