I Like Rice

Post by shadowman »

They represent what college football should be.

They have the smallest enrollment of any FBS school, they have great academics, pretty much the best degree you can get outside the Ivy League and the California elite schools.

And they still field a pretty competitive FBS football team.

I really hope if we leave the conference we still continue to play them and I wish them all the success in the World.

stealthy way to schedule an easy win later on, I'm sure that is why UT plays them too

Could be, I have no real stats to back up my statement, just something I heard before.

Either way, great school, small enrollment, and they field a pretty fun team to watch, kids that are truly student athletes.

I wish the BCS would put emphasis on academics just as much as athletics....priorities have really gotten lost in the flood of all this money.

Tulsa has the smallest undergraduate enrollment of all current FBS programs. Rice may be second, not sure

but in this world - you know , the real one, it does nothing for us to play them. THey travel horribly (even worse then us) have made no committment to their program and are heading to the trash heap of football. UTSA and Texas State will be past them if they arent already.

They need to go totally Ivy and give up 1-A football. I hope we never play them and do something else with that spot.

That is kinda mean. First of all to compare Rice to UTSA or Texas State, RICE, a former SWC member and our conference mate for over half a century.

I would rather play Rice than than Northwestern State every year. If we change conferences, keep Rice on the schedule.

It's good to have an extra game in Houston that we can routinely win for recruiting that area

Rice stadium is pretty cool, cattle call community urinals, wood benches left over from the superbowl.

I was there during a game in the early 90s and we ran to the bathroom in the upperdeck, and we could pee while still watching the game through a broken bathroom vent on the floor that had a great view of the field.

Not only a former SWC rival, but we are only slightly better than them as proven today. They beat Purdue this season. They did have the 7-6 season in 2006 that was capped by an appearance in the New Orleans Bowl followed by the 10 win season in 2008 that was capped with an appearance in the Texas Bowl. Rice has had numerous all-americans and appeared in several editions of the Cotton Bowl as well as appearances in the Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl for a total of 9 Bowl games most of which came when they meant something and all all except for NO bowl were to legit bowl games. They had several good years in the WAC, but unfortunately the WAC did not have any good bowl tie-ins for the southwest schools (hence the move to CUSA). While I hate losing to Rice, at least it is a respectable opponent and university. I can't say the same about all other teams we face. They are also 5th in CUSA recruiting if you go by number of 3-star commitments. Keep scheduling Rice!

Well said...at the end of the day, we are by no means miles ahead of Rice, we may spend a ton more money, but it hasn't got us much ahead of them.
