SMU: Where are we at in the Process?

Post by smuhype »

Well as we complete year 4 will say:

- I am as sick as anyone with our 7-5 result
- Never supported the Pardron pulling in game 1
- Didn't capitalize on the biggest win in our post DP history
- Crowds have bee horrible but sadly expected (just keep wishing somehow it will change)
- We got to tailgate scene by 9AM and was shocked at the lack of turnout

PERSPECTIVE: How great is it to be pissed off at SMU and a 7-5 season!!!???

CONCERN: Does our lack of butts in seats hurt our chances of Big East and/or any other conference consideration --- I would say HELL YES!

Any chance J. Jones begins to check out on SMU as a consequence to the overwhelming lack of support?

I like the Ponies! Michigan fan by birth. Keep expecting more and expect to be disappointed a lot. Welcome back to Big time football guys!!!!!

However call out your fans and community. You guys should draw 50k weekly minimum in that market. (not that Ford could hold it)

That would be hard to know about him checking out since all he's ever cared about is making sure his direct deposit clears the bank every two weeks.

He's done nothing to embrace the community and the culture and the history of this school. He rammed all this wild mustang, Hawaii nostalgia and refusal to wear school colors on the sideline down our throats for these four years. And he thinks he's above the criticism because hey, he's god and saved us from eternal damnation.

In short, he's done little to be the front man and sell the program. His way of selling is getting the school to buy a couple of TV programs. By not embracing SMU (at least act the part even if you really don't care), he hasn't won over the city and drawn other fans to take a look.

And I don't want to hear about him being shy and not being comfortable doing that sort of thing. Hey, buddy...suck it up and do it.

If he left because he felt like there wasn't the support, that would be laughable. Instead of pointing the finger, he should look in the mirror as to what he actually did to create the buzz instead of hide in his office, look at film and just assume that because he coached in the NFL, high school prospects would come running.

If he left because of the lack of support, then it would also illustrate that his intentions of being here weren't sincere from the moment he first stepped on this campus.

If he left because of the lack of support, I'll help him pack and pay for his cab to DFW.

I hate to admit it, bit I agree with everything MM said, and I'll be happy to help him pack up JJ's things when he decides to leave.

When MM and Diamond Girl aren't making idiotic posts on PonyFans, they're wiping each other's asses at the nuthouse.

Agreed with what you said, but I posted several times in different threads. According to students and Daily Campus, Navy game was the last blvd and home game. Most of our students are out of state and went home for thanksgiving. Even then alot of students come here for academics not football. We need to find some way to incentivize people to go to the games or cancel thanksgiving. SMU (for now) should do everything in its power to never schedule during fall break and thanksgiving.

You can't force people to go to games.

Its frustrating but that's life - it will be years until the alumni that care about football are numerous enough to make a difference.

I dont buy the fact that SMU can't make students going to the game important --- other schools make it important:

- there are class credits and incentives if your student ID gets scanned at sproting events.
- If its not free for students, make it free
- never EVER allow greeks to schedule events during games --- no overlap
- Coaches should be in dorms talking to students ever other week - like we used to see back in the mid to late 80s'

Lastly, I would agree we just dont have enought critical mass to support ANY games on T-Giving weekend. Tailgate scene was depressing --- SMU made a killing on unused tailgate spots...

What sort of support is coach lacking? He has gotten everything he has asked for. If he is frustrated about the lack of butts in seats, then so be it. We don't have a lot of fans. We had even fewer before he came.

Like people said forcing students to do stuff will only make them hate it. You have to incentivize them to do things unfortunately. Hopefully by getting them to the games, traditions can be made and thats the cement to student attendance. The best way to get people is give points to frats with most attendance (its their life blood). I agree with not making events happen same day, but people will make private parties after the game. I would agree if the attendance for students drop to a certain level parties will be cancelled. Or make frats and sororities have a required attendance, if the level are not met make a deduction in points. Coaches in dorms would just annoy them but they should be out by the flag pole pleading with students to attend and help the rebuilding.

The games are free.

The only class credit that wouldn't be ridiculous is wellness, so that might work. However, you can still get an A in this class fairly easily.

Not sure about the Greeks.

The point is, none of these things will make a big dent. A better football culture over multiple years, spilling into young alumni, will provide the foundation we need.

Actually, not a bad season. 1-2 against current top 25 teams. And one of those loses is to a top 10 team. National recognition. Since when have we received top 25 votes during a season? Lots of kids got experience. Big wins help.

Attendance wasn't as pathetic as we claim. With virtually no big team draws, we finished better than all but one year in the last 4. And the student section improved.

Perfect,? Far from it. Pathetic? Far from it.

Going bowling in a decent bowl is a good reward to a challenging season.

And this was our most challenging schedule in a very long time. The team can be proud of a winning record with at least one win over a top 25 team and a decent bowl.
