Private Schools

Postby LakeHighlandsPony » Tue Nov 30, 2004 8:07 am

I would think that alot of good players get overlooked at some of the local private schools. Some of the programs like Arl. Grace Prep and Jesuit are really on the move. Obviously, the parents of these players care about academics. Maybe SMU could grab a good one that missed everyone's radar. Anyway just something to think about.

There's a RB at American Heritage named Ryan Polite who's getting a lot of attention these days. He's a pretty solid guy (about 5-11, 205) and fast. Arlington Grace Prep has two kids who have gotten some ink (although I can't remember either of their names): a strong RB (6-0, 230 or so) and a tall (6-7), thin (240? 250?) OL who has drawn comparisons to the Weatherford guy who signed this year with TCU. St. Mark's has a senior DB/RB/QB (athlete) who reminds me a lot of Ted Barnhart - Barry Newell.

I don't know how much interest SMU has in any of them. But it sounds like there are some players out there. (After all, SMU's trying to get Jesuit DE Sean Carney, and I expect they also are after Jesuit OL Reggie Stephens).

Rivals did a story on Jesuit's Reggie Stephens this morning and mentions no interest in SMU.

Not so fast, my friend! (Sorry - hadn't dropped one of those in a while....)

Maybe you've talked to different people, but the impression I get is that while we're not banking on him, we would be interested.

Some of you people are WAY WAY to close to the coaching staff and will believe ANYTHING they tell you. That's right why would we want guys like Scott Hall and Reggie Stephens who are 3 stars recruits being recruited by 20+ schools. Its much better to recruit a series of linemen no one else wants that are shorter and slower and weaker than guys like Hall and Stephens. Please remove your lips from the coaching staffs asses immediately.

Is Scott Hall as good as Chris Hall?

Right. It's much more accurate to believe the computerized salesmen at recruiting services than what coaches - who actually see players play - have to say. Good thinking.

the day you see a Coach on signing date announce "You know - we really sucked in recruiting this year-we basically had to grab players from the bottom of the barrell just to fill out our recruiting class" is the day your point may be valid. You do realize you are being fed this information for a reason.-don't you?

Stallion, go back and read Rivals and stay off of this board. You do nothing but criticize and you know NOTHING of what you are talking about.

Coaches will certainly hype whomever they recruit. Regarding private schools different metro areas have different looks. In DC/Maryland area, the Catholic schools are loaded with talent because they recruit and offer scholarships and the DC and PG County public schools are so bad. The military schools have post-grads who are essentially college freshman and probably were All-something before going there. So in this area the coaches spend a lot of time at the private schools especially in basketball. Further down in Virginia its just the opposite.

Come on, Stallion. You're too smart for this. You really think coaches are feeding tidbits to fans/alums/parents and whoever else is on this board in order to hype a marginal prospect? The coaches have a lot more to do than to worry about what you and I think about one kid or another. I can just see the staff meeting where Coach Bennett admits that we're recruiting some real scrubs but tells the staff "someone slip this to Stallion or Hoop Fan or Lotus or someone, so he can get it out on PonyFans.com." The class they're building will be fine, regardless of what you and I think. This staff has shown they can identify talent, and that they can recruit those talented players.

This class has started out well with 4 BIG MEN a LB and a QB.... ALL needed recruits.

I see more BIG MEN and if my wish comes true, a few from the JUCO ranks. I guess we will see on Dec. 15th or so.

Bennett and staff are doing a good job and we DO have some good stories to tell as the team got BETTER this year.

Not good enough for me but better.

Go MUSTANGS and GO COACHES   :D

Don't we have a spot or two left over - so a JUCO or two could come in in January and count against last year's class, rather than against the February class?
