7-5 and Context
If you spent anytime watching this program the last 20 years you would kill for 7-5. But consider that during those last 20 years, we were competing under a model that was impossible to win be successful under. When we hired June Jones we scrapped that model and are now at the end of year four of June. Here are our seven wins
Northwestern St. (at home)
Tulane (at home)
Utep (at home)
Rice (at home)
UCF (at home)
Memphis
TCU
With the exception of TCU, which was a great win, color me not impressed. And having watched this team play every game, with the way we are playing now, unless with play Plano East in bowl game, we will lose. I realize we are better than we were 10 years or 20 years ago, but at what point will we stop using being horrible as the bar.

IMO once we have 5 consecutive winning seasons.
5 is important to me because it reflects 2 graduating classes of all winning. I believe this will be the start to a changing culture among the student body.
After that, 7-5 will be failure.

Do you count 2010 at 7-7? I say yes. Playing for championship was a huge step.

I thought about that after my post and almost amended to say .500 or better. Didn't think I'd get called out but should have known better around here.
I agree with you 00

I think 5 seasons is a good benchmark, too.

You may be waiting for six more years then. Without a QB and a pretty stiff non-conf next year, 2012 is going to be rough.
I very well could be but I expect that they continue to step up.

This is exactly what June has done in less than 24 hours. He's already set low expectations so now a lot of other people are on board with that philosophy.
I can't and won't accept it. This program should be reaching a zenith if he and his staff were...

Re: 7-5 and Context
Every home win is important. And two on the road isn't bad. And one is against a top 25 team. Not bad at all.
We finished with Bennett's recruits on the O line. Fine development of someone else's talent. Hats off to Klemm.
And the others are an abbreviated recruiting class. Jones did well.
There is not anything more exciting than going bowling to a player. And we have kids that have never experienced anything but bowling. That is a new attitude in this program and I embrace it.
And watching the kids play onD against Rice convinces me we are heading in the right direction.

Years past we would been 3-9, 4-8
This is an improvement considering the QB situation and the turnover ratio (We are near dead last in Div1).
The first step is to win all the teams you are supposed to be - we did.
And then win some that you shouldn't (we did - TCU, UCF). We had bad QB/hurt QB in S Miss and Tulsa. We played the best against Houston of any team save LaTech or UCLA - both before Houston started gelling. Look at what Houston did before us and after us...our D played pretty well.
Tulsa only lost to 4 Top 10 teams - OU, OSU, Houston, Boise. If TW catches that first long pass, the entire game complexion would have been different.
This exact team would have been 8-4 with a healthy JJ, and perhaps 9-3 if KP would have been available. Even the aggie game - we would have taken a 21-20 lead if JJ hits the wide open guy deep. Instead we punt.

?Plano East? IDK. They can wear all black. They got Johnny Ringo. And they play the Michigan fight song. They might use the '94 onsides kick multiple times to keep the ball out of Mustangs hands.

No. A tie is not a win. It's a tie.

That would be their downfall keeping the ball out of the offenses hands. Its our defense that they need to be worried about!

After tying Ohio State in '78, we got on the plane home in a mood as dejected as losing. The showering, bus ride to the airpot, all of it was as if we had lost. Meyer walk on the plane, when all of us were seated, and said that as he shook Hayes hand, he stole Hayes' OSU hat. Meyer then slapped an OSU hat on his head ( low on his forehead) and walked with a huge grin down the plane aisle to us cheering.
That was the moment I knew we had done something special. Sure, it was like kissing one's sister but it was a unique accomplishment. Sometimes winning isn't by itself a measure of success. We didn't win but we knew we could play with anyone, anyone in the country.
And I believe we are to that point again where we can play with anyone inn the country. Not late in the year as depth is still an issue. But early we can.

I know SMU's defense is good. But my little joking around refers to when every time Plano East did an onsides kick against Tyler John Tyler (Big John, Big Bad John) East recovered it and then scored a TD. They did it like 4 times in a row to take the lead. So it was unstoppable in that game. The heartbreaker for East came when they kicked off long and then didn't tackle the guy. It's probably still on youtube under Plano East and John Tyler. I was at that game at Texas Stadium. It was fun that the underdogs nearly beat TJT, the eventual state champs.
And as far as ties, I know they can feel like a victory at times and it beats losing but in the books it's not the same.
