Re: 7-5 and Context
we didnt beat everyone we were suppose to. We did not beat Navy and we did not beat Tulsa - both teams are teams we should have beaten. Navy was especially crazy. Some say we stop playing them. I say we absolutely go up there and kick their [deleted] next year.
I didnt do everything as a fan i could have done to help - bring more people, talk it up, stay through every game, cheer louder and influence others - and i will try to do those things in the future.
I hope the coaches are asking themselves the same thing - what can we do to get this closer to great? Lets invest in a kicker, make sure we are deep enough at QB, get a signal system like every other team in america, maybe call the high percentage play more often instead of the quirky ego call, try to engrain myself with the local traditions and culture and fans instead of clinging to our useless polynisian past, work the recruiting trail a little harder. They need to prove their staff and system can go big time - which they have not proven yet.
And SMU athletic admin - lets achkownledge we have to invest more in tutors, give June more recruiting budget, commit to an IPF and spend some money on sales and promotions. That will help us get there also.

BTW, there is no doubt that I will keep my tickets for 2012.

It will be ugly, depending on QB. Im hoping we can split 2-2 on Big 12 teams but realistically 1 and even more 0. So hopefully with an easier CUSA schedule we can still squeak by 6-6

Boy it didn't take long for the June Jones 2012 talking points to catch fire. Less than 24 hours. Impressive.
Re: 7-5 and Context
The Defense is getting better, offense getting worse.
This coaching staff cannot identify, recruit, and coach a qb.
If Roger Staubach walked through the door, June and Dan Morrison would have him starring down recievers, holding the ball too long, overthrowing passes, and fumbling within 4 games.

Re: 7-5 and Context
After tying Ohio State in '78, we got on the plane home in a mood as dejected as losing. The showering, bus ride to the airpot, all of it was as if we had lost. Meyer walk on the plane, when all of us were seated, and said that as he shook Hayes hand, he stole Hayes' OSU hat. Meyer then slapped an OSU hat on his head ( low on his forehead) and walked with a huge grin down the plane aisle to us cheering.
That was the moment I knew we had done something special. Sure, it was like kissing one's sister but it was a unique accomplishment. Sometimes winning isn't by itself a measure of success. We didn't win but we knew we could play with anyone, anyone in the country.
And I believe we are to that point again where we can play with anyone inn the country. Not late in the year as depth is still an issue. But early we can.[/quote]
Great story! Good to see you yesterday.

But consider that during those last 20 years, we were competing under a model that was impossible to win be successful under. When we hired June Jones we scrapped that model and are now at the end of year four of June. Here are our seven wins
Northwestern St. (at home)
Tulane (at home)
Utep (at home)
Rice (at home)
UCF (at home)
Memphis
TCU
With the exception of TCU, which was a great win, color me not impressed. And having watched this team play every game, with the way we are playing now, unless with play Plano East in bowl game, we will lose. I realize we are better than we were 10 years or 20 years ago, but at what point will we stop using being horrible as the bar.
Years past we would been 3-9, 4-8
This is an improvement considering the QB situation and the turnover ratio (We are near dead last in Div1).
The first step is to win all the teams you are supposed to be - we did.
And then win some that you shouldn't (we did - TCU, UCF). We had bad QB/hurt QB in S Miss and Tulsa. We played the best against Houston of any team save LaTech or UCLA - both before Houston started gelling. Look at what Houston did before us and after us...our D played pretty well.
Tulsa only lost to 4 Top 10 teams - OU, OSU, Houston, Boise. If TW catches that first long pass, the entire game complexion would have been different.
This exact team would have been 8-4 with a healthy JJ, and perhaps 9-3 if KP would have been available. Even the aggie game - we would have taken a 21-20 lead if JJ hits the wide open guy deep. Instead we punt.
Beating a 5-7 UCF team was not a major accomplishment, especially at home. The only signature win was TCU, especially away. Played like shipt away, exception of Memphis. This is an average team that was fortunate to play a soft schedule. And, now Jones is down playing our 2012 potential. Very disappointing to say the least. Making a bowl game for the 3rd year is our consolation. After Jones said this would be our best year yet, I am disappointed it wasn't true.

No. A tie is not a win. It's a tie.

That was a great game and I was as proud of the team as if it had won. Some people here forget that Ron Meyer, the greatest recruiter ever, didnt even break .500 until his fifth season at SMU, and he inherited a team that matched up against the opponents physically much better than the one JJ inherited.

Impossible to go 2-2 on Big12 teams in the regular season seeing how we only play three next year

I hope your coach really did steal Woody's hat! But you knew I was gonna say that. You might not have won but neither did ohio and I like that a lot too! Awesome story.
Maybe the kids you have right now will get a chance to play the Buckeyes in front of their home town crowd. I promise to scream at my TV for 4 quarters if you do even though I usually pull for them ooc. I know it isn't as cool as going to Hawaii but it's a neccesary step if SMU is going to reach the real goal and play in New Orleans (at the Sugar Bowl), Miami, Tempe or Pasadena. I mean that's what the whole AQ campaign is for, for the players anyways.
The SMU comeback and it is STILL a comeback story is right cool in my humble average joe beer guzzling football fan from the midwest's opinion.

sorry got my years wrong, 2013 i think we can go 2-2 and 2012 at least pull away with one or two wins (at least against Baylor for 1 win and split between AM/TCU. Im thinking RG3 will be drafting while hes on top. However Baylor does have good offense. If we can fire ours up, we should be able to take it to them.

you're right, they beat Navy 24-21, my bad... So you guys could go into Columbia and go blow for Blow with USC , with a healthy Marcus Lattimore ???? Maybe. Navy is a royal PITA to beat. Whether you call them mediocre or they were or not. They play some big bangers in the FBS world.

Please never refer to South Carolina as USC!
There is only one USC, The University of Southern California, and we have a judgement against South Carolina to prove the point!
