I did tend to tune into Hawaii in '06 and '07 partly b/c they were on late and then became intrigued by guys flying around the field and how fast they were. It was fun to watch but can't say we have come close to that yet.
USM game wasn't entertaining unless you are a USM fan. By the way, the WAC had some horrible teams, and none played defense.
won't be fun to watch until we have a solid qb that can run the offense. Let's look at who we have trotted out at that position during JJ's tenure:
BLM- low level recruit that followed JJ from Hawaii to SMU. Would he have started at Hawaii? Not sure, but my guess is no.
Padron- low level recruit who missed most of his senior year and was thrown into action way too early because of BLM's injury. Had very little game experience in HS as a backup to some 4 star qbs. Offered him after a qb camp. While he impressed in Hawaii Bowl, that may have been a lucky, one-time event that will not be repeated.
JJMcD - low level recruit, transfer from NMSt, solid backup but never should have been a FBS starter.
So in June's time here, we have had very lightly recruited players start at the most important position in the RnS offense. Kaiser must be really bad to not even sniff the field this year.
For our sake next year, I really hope CP is legit. He was a 3 star, with offers from Cincy and a few others. Played at a high level in HS with some of the best players in the country who are now tearing it up at USC. In 2013 & 2014, we should have Gilbert, a legit 5 star pro-style qb.
But I think the RnS will really get moving when Printz is a soph/junior. That kid is possibly the best junior qb in the country.

Pretty sure he commented that as the team gets better and starts winning games, he expected that recruiting talent on the defensive side would get easier. I agree with what you are saying, i.e., we are not very entertaining right now. Obviously we could use an upgrade at QB.
The whole attendance issue is the proverbial chicken vs egg. If SMU was a larger school with a larger fan base that had strong attendance, it would be easier to recruit. But...we are what we are and realistically will have trouble ever reaching a point where a ticket in Ford will be hard to come by.
3 straight bowl trips is a good start. Just need to keep some momentum because this is a long rebuilding process for a program that lost a generation of fans
he had also planned on having a QB that could consistently throwing the ball beyond the line of scrimmage...
I don't think you're being quite fair in your evaluation of Padron if you're saying he got lucky "one game". The kid can throw. In 2009, he came in during the eighth game and still posted a 5-1 record (the loss being UH, the game he entered late) while throwing for 1,922 yards, 10 TDs and becoming the fifth highest passer rating in football. Before that he was threw for 1,550 yards and 18 TDs before breaking his hand in his fifth game with Southlake Carroll. Those numbers aren't bad at all. My concern is that if June can't get a guy capable of throwing of 4000+ yards/season, with a better than 2:1 TD/INT ratio, to be able to run his offense as a Junior, how much better will a 4-star freshman be able to run it? We either have a "player smarts" problem or a "system installation strategy" problem at our QB position and my bet would be against Kyle Padron not being smart enough to "figure it out".
Kyle Padron YEAR RK ATT COMP PCT YDS YDS/A TD INT SACK RAT 2010 43 508 302 59.4 3828 7.5 31 14 31 137.4 2009 5 201 135 67.2 1922 9.6 10 4 22 159.9
SMUer - wasn't trying to blast Padron at all. Just not sure he will ever put up Brennan or Chang numbers in the RnS. He's a good kid and played well for us. I was just reiterating that he was not highly recruited and I think we all inflated his abilities after that Nevada game.

Right. I wasn't accusing you of bashing him, just pointing out that he performed at a pretty high-level, consistently, his freshman and sophomore years and wasn't just a "one-game wonder". Why is it that 5 or 6 games into our system, new QBs actually start looking worse, displaying bad habits and throwing INTs? Maybe June makes the offense more complicated than they are mentally capable of but I kinda doubt it. I think it's a offense installation problem and I'm not sure that's going to get fixed just because we have a new four-star QB.

Agree SMUer, the regression after 5 games or so in this system is troubling for sure. maybe injuries, maybe too much too soon, or might be the abilities of our recent qb's. Guess we will see once Gilbert and Printz arrive.

As hard core fans, we all had a roller coaster ride on Saturday. Was actually a very exciting game if you were a fan of either team. Play was very sloppy at times but what an emotional roller coaster. Went from looking pretty good and on the verge of a convincing win...to choking like dogs and blowing a game to Rice...to hanging on to win and discovering another big back. One of the more exciting games all season (if you can get past the stadium atmosphere) because it was one this program absolutely needed to win to keep any positive momentum.
Perfect evaluation of McDermott, probably could be an all-star flag football QB.
KP- I agree that when he started to get hit (Mcd only specialty) he got nervous and started throwing the ball too soon. He just needs confidence and lots of practice for the next season.
I really wish our young recruits are just being put to the side for 2014 season after gilbert. However the fact our flag football QB is still in must be conclusive that our young QBs suck. I just dont get why... I thought we had decent recruiting classes. If our QB situation fails under KP, surely not Gilbert, but after him as well. We need to just think running offense or at least 60 run 40 pass, because all I have seen are great coverted RBs.
